Gears of War supports the following types of game modes:
- Campaign
You can select from the following types of single player (Campaign) games:
- Single player
- Split screen
- Co-op
- Versus
You can select from the following types of multiplayer (Versus) games:
- Local (split screen)
- System link
- Xbox Live
Campaign
In Campaign game mode, you play in story mode. You can play with one player or with two players who work together cooperatively.
To select a Campaign game mode, on the Main Menu screen, select Campaign, and then press the A button. The following options are available on the Campaign screen:
- Single Player
In single player mode, you play on your own as a single player. If you play on Xbox Live, you can invite a friend.
- Split-Screen
In split screen mode, you fight side by side with a friend.
- Join Co-Op Game
In this kind of co-op mode, you join a game and play a campaign with another player. You play as Dominic.
- Host Co-Op Game
In this kind of co-op mode, you host a campaign in which another player can join as Dominic.
Versus
In Versus game mode, you can host or join competitive multiplayer matches. To select a Versus game mode, on the Main Menu screen, select Versus, and then press the A button. The following options are available on the Versus Multiplayer screen:
- Local
In a Local match, you play one-on-one against another player on the same Xbox 360 console.
- System Link
In a system link match, you engage in combat against other players over a local area network.
- Xbox Live Ranked Match
In an Xbox Live Ranked match, you play true skill balanced games on Xbox Live where players' statistics are tracked.
- Xbox Live Player Match
In an Xbox Live Player match, you play public or private games on Xbox Live where players' statistics are not tracked.
- Leaderboards
On the leaderboard, you can see how you rank in competitive multiplayer matches.
Connection types
- System link
In system link play, you can connect up to eight Xbox consoles together on a local area network.
- Xbox Live
In Xbox Live play, you can connect up to eight people to play with on Xbox Live.
