The information in this article applies to:
- Microsoft Word for MS-DOS, versions 5.0 and 5.5 - Microsoft Word for Windows, versions 1.0, 1.1, 1.1a, 2.0, 2.0a, 2.0a-CD, 2.0b, and 2.0c - Microsoft Windows operating system versions 3.0 and 3.1

Summary:

As stated in the Word versions 1.x and 2.0 for Windows conversion- information document CONVINFO.DOC, graphic screen captures (.SCR files) created with the Word for MS-DOS CAPTURE.COM utility are not directly supported for insertion in Word 1.x or 2.0 for Windows, either as a part of a converted Word for MS-DOS document or separately through the Insert Picture command.

Word 1.1 and 1.1a for Windows will always return an error indicating they cannot read or display such an image. Word 2.0 for Windows may recognize some .SCR files and convert and display them successfully as if they were PCX images due to the similarity of the .SCR and .PCX file formats. However, this recognition is not guaranteed to occur consistently.

Workaround:

An independent software vendor named Jewell Technologies markets a product known as “The Juggler” that supports conversion of Word for MS-DOS CAPTURE.COM .SCR files to and from other graphic formats, many of which are supported by Word for Windows. More Information:

The CAPTURE.COM utility supplied with Word versions 5.0 and 5.5 for MS-DOS can be used to save graphic screen images to a file format that Word for MS-DOS can import through the Library Link Graphics command (Word 5.0) or through the Insert Picture command (Word 5.5). Graphic screen images are saved from CAPTURE.COM in a file with an .SCR extension.

The CAPTURE.COM utility saves files in two formats. If the screen image is a graphics image, the CAPTURE.COM saves a representation of the image in the .SCR graphic format. If the screen image is a text image, depending on the Setup option chosen for CAPTURE.COM, you can capture the image as either an ASCII text file or an .SCR graphic file. If the image is saved as a text file, the .LST file extension is applied by default.

For more information on the configuration and use of the CAPTURE.COM utility, see the discussion of CAPTURE.COM in the “Using Microsoft Word” manual for Word versions 5.0 or 5.5 for MS-DOS.
