Excel: Documents Not Opening Up in a Full Window

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Excel for the Macintosh, versions 1.x, 2.2, 3.0, 4.0

SUMMARY

Zooming the active window of an Excel document does not affect the size of the window when it is reopened. Clicking the zoom box sets the "zoom state" of the active window to be zoomed in or zoomed out, meaning that the window that is the active window will be zoomed accordingly. Switching the active window by clicking another document (multiple monitor setup) or by selecting another document from the Window menu causes that window to appear in the current zoom state and the previous active window to return to its default size.

The zoom state is not remembered when you quit Excel, or when all windows are closed (Excel displays the null menu bar). Therefore, any documents opened in Excel will open to the saved window size unless the document currently displayed is zoomed out. To ensure that windows open to full size, resize the window manually by clicking the size box in the lower-right corner and sizing the documents to full size.
