MS-DOS

The information in this article applies to:
- Microsoft Word for MS-DOS versions 2.0, 2.01, 3.0, 3.01, 3.11, 4.0, 5.0, 5.5, 6.0

SUMMARY

In Microsoft Word versions 2.x, 3.x, 4.0, and 5.0, the error message:

Style sheet is not available

appears when a document file is loaded and the style sheet that was originally attached to the document is not present in the drive or directory from which it was originally attached.

Word versions 2.x, 3.x, and 4.0 remember the name of the style sheet and the drive and directory in which it is stored. Word version 5.00 remembers the name, drive, and directory of the style sheet only when the style sheet and document are in separate directories. When the document and style sheet are in the same directory, Word 5.00 remembers only the name of the style sheet. This information is recorded in the header of each document file and is updated each time the file is saved.

MORE INFORMATION

There are several causes for this error message. The causes and solutions are listed below.

  1. Word is run from drive A and the attached style sheet does not exist on drive A and/or the the document disk is in the B drive. Or, the style sheet has been moved from the drive or directory that is specified in the header of the document.

To correct this problem, reattach the correct style sheet using the instructions below.

    1. Select Format Stylesheet Attach.

    2. Enter the correct drive letter, path, and filename.

    3. Press ENTER.

  2. Word cannot find NORMAL.STY, tries to create the style sheet NORMAL.STY, and is unable to.

The disk may be write protected. Remove the write-protect tab. The disk may also be full or may have reached its capacity of filenames in the root directory. Remove some files to allow room for Word to create NORMAL.STY.

  3. You are running a print merge in which an INCLUDE statement is calling a file whose style sheet Word is unable to find. This will cause the print merge to abort in Word 4.00.

Reattach the correct style sheet to the Included documents using the following instructions:

    1. Select Format Stylesheet Attach.

    2. Enter the correct drive letter, path, and filename.

    3. Press ENTER.

Notes

With versions earlier than 4.0, the Format Stylesheet Attach option is not present, but the same function can be carried out after selecting Format Stylesheet.

If you are using removable media (for example, floppy disks, Bernoulli boxes, etc.), you may need to copy the style sheet from the previous disk to the one currently being used.

To reattach a stylesheet in Word 5.5, 6.0, use Format, Attach Style Sheet (ALT T A) and choose the stylesheet to attach.
