Summary:

Forward pass computations are performed by Microsoft Project for Windows and Macintosh sequentially from the start date of the project through the end date of the project. Forward pass computations yield the earliest expected start and finish times for each task.

Backward pass computations are performed from the end time of a project back to the start date. Backward pass computations yield the latest allowable start and finish times.
