Scatter Chart Appears to Reorganize Data Incorrectly PSS ID Number: Q38755 Article last modified on 02-26-1993 PSS database name: W_eXceL

Summary:

When you create a chart from the following data and convert it to a scatter chart, the data appears to be rearranged incorrectly:

Dec-88 1 Mar-89 2 Jun-89 3 Sep-89 4 Dec-89 5 Mar-90 6 Jun-90 7 Sep-90 8 Dec-90 9

Months seem to be connected to the wrong data points and invalid months appear on the category axis when you convert it to a scatter chart. However, if you view this data as a column chart, it appears correctly.

More Information:

The organization of a scatter chart differs from other chart formats in how the category (x) axis is laid out. On scatter charts, the category axis is divided into evenly spaced major units. Also, the distance between major units on the category axis is the same distance as between major units on the value axis. This does not imply that the units on the category and value axis are the same.

If the data for the category axis is evenly spaced, your data will appear as the major units. When the data is not evenly spaced, some of your data will not appear but will fall between the major units on the category axis.
