When a footnote appears at the bottom of a page, but not in the footnote window, it has most likely been typed into the footnote separator. Text that has been entered in the footnote separator will appear at the bottom of each page, but does not appear in the footnote window.

To change the footnote separator to remove any text that may have been mistakenly placed there, do the following:

  1. Highlight one of the footnote reference numbers in your document.
  2. From the Insert menu, choose the Footnote command.
  3. In Word for Windows 1.x, choose the Separator button. In Word for Windows 2.0, choose the Options button, then choose the Separator button.
  4. Delete any unwanted text in the separator window or click the Reset button to return to the default Separator.
