Cannot Add Mouse or Keyboard in Add/Remove Hardware Wizard
The information in this article applies to:
- Microsoft Windows 2000 Advanced Server
- Microsoft Windows 2000 Datacenter Server
- Microsoft Windows 2000 Professional
- Microsoft Windows 2000 Server
When you use the Add/Remove Hardware wizard on a computer running Windows 2000, the option to add a mouse or keyboard is not available.
Windows 2000 detects a standard keyboard and serial or PS/2-style mouse using Ntdetect.com. Plug and Play devices such as a Universal Serial Bus (USB) keyboard or USB mouse are enumerated by the Plug and Play components in Windows 2000 and are installed automatically.
Manually adding these types of devices is not an option because these devices are installed automatically when they are working properly.
For more information on compatible hardware for Windows 2000, consult the Windows NT Hardware Compatibility List (HCL). This is a compilation of computers and computer hardware that have been extensively tested with Windows NT for stability and compatibility. Microsoft Product Support Services uses the HCL to determine whether or not a computer is supported for use with the Windows NT operating system. The latest HCL is available from the following Microsoft Web site:
