SUMMARY

In Exchange System Manager, you find the Recipient Update Service. The primary function of the Recipient Update Service is to identify any mail-enabled (or mailbox-enabled) object within Windows 2000 Active Directory, and update its attributes each time that you create or modify the mail-enabled object.

MORE INFORMATION

The Recipient Update Service sets and/or modifies the attributes in the following areas:

Recipient Policy:

  • proxyAddresses
  • textEncodedORAddress
  • mail

Address List:

  • showInAddressBook

System Policy:

  • homeMDB, homeMTA and msExchHomeServerName
  • msExchMailboxGuid (if it is not already present, and if the msExchHomeServerName attribute is present)
  • Sets the displayName to be the mailNickname

Miscellaneous:

  • Sets the Security Descriptor on cn=Microsoft Exchange System Objects,DC=domain,DC=com to reflect the administrative rights given by the Delegate Wizard
  • Populates the members of the Exchange Enterprise Servers group on each domain

The settings for the Recipient Update Service reside in the registry at the following location:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\MSExchangeAL

To determine if the Recipient Update Service has modified an object in Active Directory, check for the msExchALObjectVersion attribute. If this attribute is present, the Recipient Update Service has processed this object.
