SYMPTOMS

When you attempt to record a narration in Microsoft PowerPoint, you receive the following error message:

PowerPoint is not receiving sound from microphone

You also may receive the error message when you click Set Microphone Level in the Record Narration dialog box, or when you click Change Quality.

CAUSE

This is a known issue with sound hardware that uses the OPL3SAx and DS-XG devices from Yamaha, and utilizes the DS-XG driver, version 4.05.1024. This includes hardware from Yamaha, as well as the following hardware:

  • Addonics Technologies Awesome 128
  • A-Trend Technology Co.,Ltd. ATC-6631D
  • Labway Corporation PCI Sound C90
  • Netertainment, Inc. Axra Yamaha 16-bit ISA Sound Card
  • APAC Multimedia Corporation 3DS724A
  • Aureal Vortex 1 PCI sound board (driver ver. 4.06.1189).

RESOLUTION

Contact your sound card manufacturer for an updated driver, if one is available.

If an updated driver is not available, and you have multiple audio sources on your system, turn off the XG device and use the other sound hardware to capture the audio instead.
