International characters sent in a Microsoft Outlook 97 e-mail message may be stripped of their umlauts and accents when received by the addressee.

The message was sent over the Internet using the US-ASCII character set.

Change the characters set to, ISO 8859-1.

Steps for changing the character set vary, depending on whether or not you are using The Internet Mail Enhancement Patch (IMEP).

If You Are Using the IMEP

  1. On the Tools menu, click Options.
  2. On the Internet E-mail tab, click to select, ISO 8859-1, from the Character Set list and click OK.
  3. Restart Outlook.

If You Are Not Using the IMEP

  1. On the Tools menu, click Services.
  2. Click to select Internet Mail and then click Properties.
  3. On the General tab click, Message Format.
  4. Click Character Set, click to select ISO 8859-1 from the list and then click OK, to exit all dialog boxes.
