When you roll the wheel on a Microsoft IntelliMouse while using Microsoft Excel 97, you may receive the following error message:

This program has performed an illegal operation and will be shut down.
If the problem persists, contact the program vendor.

If you click Details, you receive an error message similar to the following:

EXCEL caused an invalid page fault in module MSO97.DLL at 0137:307333ca.

This problem occurs if the following conditions are true:

  • The worksheet you are currently editing (Sheet1, for example) contains a split or frozen panes. -and-

  • While you are editing a formula in Sheet1, you activate another workbook or another worksheet, and then scroll up or down by rolling the wheel on the Microsoft IntelliMouse.

To prevent this problem from occurring, do not roll the wheel on the Microsoft IntelliMouse when you are editing a formula in a workbook whose window contains a split or frozen panes.

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in the Microsoft products listed at the beginning of this article. This problem no longer occurs in Microsoft Excel 2000.
