Kids Plus!: How To Restore Lost Protect It! Password

IMPORTANT: This article contains information about editing the registry. Before you edit the registry, you should first make a backup copy of the registry files (System.dat and User.dat). Both are hidden files in the Windows folder.

SUMMARY

Microsoft Plus! For Kids Protect It! requires a password when you start the application. If you forget this password, you are required to remove Protect It! from your hard drive, as outlined on the last page of the jewel case booklet. The following is the exact text from the booklet:

To remove Protect It! from your computer:

  1. Put your Microsoft Plus! For Kids disc in the CD caddy (if needed), and then insert it into the CD-ROM drive.
  2. Click the Start button, and then click Run.
  3. Type: rundll32.exe d:\protect!\piclean.dll,clean or, if your CD-ROM drive letter is not d, substitute the letter of your CD-ROM drive. Important: Don't type any spaces around the comma!
  4. Exit and restart Windows.

This will remove Protect It! from your system. You can then reinstall Protect It! and enter a new password.

To avoid having to completely uninstall Protect It!, you can delete the MList value from the KEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\ Microsoft Kids\Kids Plus!\Special key in the Windows registry.

For information about how to edit the registry, view the Changing Keys And Values online Help topic in Registry Editor (Regedit.exe). Note that you should make a backup copy of the registry files (System.dat and User.dat) before you edit the registry.

WARNING: Using Registry Editor incorrectly can cause serious problems that may require you to reinstall Windows. Microsoft cannot guarantee that problems resulting from the incorrect use of Registry Editor can be solved. Use Registry Editor at your own risk. The registry is a system-wide database used for storing Windows software and hardware configuration settings.

To delete the MList value:

  1. Click the Start button, and then click Run.
  2. Type the following and click OK:

    regedit

  3. When the Registry Editor appears, double-click the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE folder.
  4. Double-click the SOFTWARE folder, and then the Microsoft folder.
  5. Double-click the Microsoft Kids folder, and then the Kids Plus! folder.
  6. Double Click the Special folder.
  7. Click the MList value to select it.
  8. From the Registry menu, click Export Registry File. Name the file and save it to your desktop as a backup.
  9. With the MList value still selected, from the Edit menu, click Delete. Close the Registry.

The next time you enter Protect It!, it will prompt you for a new password.
