The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Excel for Windows, versions 5.0, 5.0c
  • Microsoft Excel for the Macintosh, versions 5.0, 5.0a
  • Microsoft Excel for Windows NT, version 5.0
  • Microsoft Excel for Windows 95, version 7.0

SUMMARY

In Microsoft Excel, you can enter a defined name in the Print Area and Print Titles boxes in the Page Setup dialog box (from the File menu, choose Page Setup). When you do this, Microsoft Excel will remove the name and replace it with its absolute definition when you close the Page Setup dialog box.

The only way to create a "dynamic" print area or print titles is to define the names <Sheetname>!Print_Area and <Sheetname>!Print_Titles on the worksheet, where <Sheetname> is the name of the worksheet. Microsoft Excel will automatically use these names in the Page Setup dialog box.

This is by design.

MORE INFORMATION

Steps to Reproduce Behavior

  1. In a new worksheet, select columns A, B, and C.
  2. From the Insert menu, choose Name, and then choose Define.
  3. In the Names In Workbook box, type "TestTitles" (without the quotation marks) and choose OK.
  4. Select cells D1:K10.
  5. From the Insert menu, choose Name, and then choose Define.
  6. In the Names In Workbook box, type "TestArea" and choose OK.
  7. From the File menu, choose Page Setup.
  8. Select the Sheet tab.
  9. In the Print Area box, type "TestArea" (without the quotation marks). In the Columns To Repeat At Left box, type "TestTitles" and choose OK.
  10. From the File menu, choose Page Setup.

The Print Area box will now contain the reference $D$1:$K$10 and the Columns To Repeat At Left box will now contain $A:$C. When you exit Page Setup, Microsoft Excel replaces the names with their absolute definitions.

Note that if <Sheetname>!Print_Area and <Sheetname>!Print_Titles have been defined they will be used automatically.
