SUMMARY

To export Microsoft Works files to Microsoft Access for Windows, save the document as a text file, load the file to an MS-DOS-formatted floppy disk using Apple File Exchange, then import the file into Access.

SAVING THE DATABASE FILE IN WORKS 3.0 OR 4.0 AS A TEXT FILE

To save the Database file in Works 3.0 or 4.0 as a text file, follow these steps:

  1. Open the Database file in Works 3.0 or 4.0.
  2. From the File menu, choose Save As.
  3. Give the file a new name, click File Format, and select Text.
  4. Click Save.

SAVING THE DATABASE FILES IN WORKS 2.0 AS A TEXT FILE

To save the Database files in Works 2.0 as a text file, follow these steps:

  1. Open the Database document in Works 2.0.
  2. From the File menu, choose Save As.
  3. Give the file a new name, and click Export File.
  4. Click Save.

LOADING THE DATABASE FILE TO AN MS-DOS FORMATTED DISK

To load the Database file to an MS-DOS 3.5-inch formatted floppy disk, follow these steps:

  1. Start Apple File Exchange. Apple File Exchange can be found on the system disks if it’s not installed.
  2. Insert the MS-DOS-formatted floppy.
  3. From the Mac To MS-DOS menu, choose Default Translation.
  4. Locate the file on the hard drive and click once to select it.
  5. Click the Translate button.
  6. When the translation is done, eject the disk by clicking the Eject button.
  7. From the File menu, choose Quit.

IMPORTING THE DATABASE FILE INTO ACCESS

To import the Database file into Access, follow these steps:

  1. Open the Database file or switch to the Database window in an open database.
  2. From the File menu, choose Import.
  3. In the Data Source list box, select Text (Delimited), and click OK. Access displays the Select File dialog box.
  4. Select the text file to import from the floppy disk, and click Import.
  5. Click Options.
  6. In the File Type list box, select Windows (ANSI).
  7. In the Text Delimiter box, select {none}.
  8. In the Field Separator box, select {tab}.
  9. Click OK.

IMPORTING FILES FROM ACCESS TO WORKS

To import files from Access to Works, export the table as text, load the file to a Macintosh using Apple File Exchange, then import the file into Works.

EXPORTING THE ACCESS FILE AS A TEXT FILE

To export the Access file as a text file, follow these steps:

  1. Switch to the Database file containing the table to be exported.
  2. From the File menu, choose Export.
  3. From the Data Destination list box, select Text (Delimited) and click OK.
  4. From the Tables box, select the table to export and click OK.
  5. Enter the filename of the text file to export to and click OK.
  6. Click Options.
  7. In the File Type list box, select Windows (ANSI).
  8. In the Text Delimiter box, select {none}
  9. In the Field Separator box, select {tab}.
  10. Click OK.

LOADING THE DATABASE FILE TO THE MACINTOSH USING APPLE FILE EXCHANGE

To load the Database file to the Macintosh using Apple File Exchange, follow these steps:

  1. Start Apple File Exchange. Apple File Exchange can be found on the system disks if it’s not installed.
  2. Insert the MS-DOS-formatted floppy disk containing the Database file.
  3. From the MS-DOS To Mac menu, choose Default Translation.
  4. Locate the file on the floppy drive and click once to select it.
  5. Open or create a folder to hold the Database file.
  6. Click the Translate button.
  7. When the translation is done, eject the disk by clicking the Eject button.
  8. From the File menu, choose Quit.

IMPORTING THE DATABASE FILE TO MICROSOFT WORKS 3.0 OR 4.0

To import the Database file to Microsoft Works 3.0 or 4.0, follow these steps:

  1. Open Works by double-clicking the Works icon.
  2. Click the Database icon once.
  3. Under the File Format list box choose All Available.
  4. Locate the Database file on the hard drive, using the scroll bar.
  5. Click Open or double-click the Database filename.
  6. When the Separate Database Fields By box appears, select Tabs and click OK.

IMPORTING THE DATABASE FILE TO MICROSOFT WORKS 2.0

To import the Database file to Microsoft Works 2.0, follow these steps:

  1. Open Works by double-clicking the Works icon.
  2. Click the Database icon once.
  3. Click Import File.
  4. Locate the Database file on the hard drive, using the scroll bar.
  5. Click Open or double-click the Database filename.
  6. When the Separate Database Fields By box appears, select Tabs and click OK.
