Can't Paste Link Percent Work Complete to a Task with No Work

Q103024

kbusage

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Project for Windows, versions 3.0, 3.0a, 4.0
  • Microsoft Project for the Macintosh, version 3.0

SYMPTOMS

When you link the % Work Complete to a task with no hours of work, Microsoft Project ignores the linked value. The same behavior occurs if you try to manually enter a value into the % Work Complete field on a task that has no work. NOTE: Linking the % Work Complete field from one task to another may cause an infinite recalculation to occur.

WORKAROUND

To get the correct % Work Complete to appear for the task, from the source task, link the Work and the Actual work fields instead of the % Work Complete field.

MORE INFORMATION

Steps to Reproduce Behavior

In Microsoft Project version 4.0

  1. From the View menu, choose More Views. From the Views list, select Task Entry, and choose Apply. Enter two tasks, T1 and T2, with a duration of 1d for each.
  2. Select task T2 and choose the Resource Assignment button from the Standard toolbar.
  3. In the Name column, type Bob, and press ENTER. Choose the Assign button.
  4. In the Gantt Chart view, select task T2. From the Insert menu, choose Task Information. Select the General tab, and in the Percent Complete box, type 100. Choose OK.
  5. From the View menu, choose Table, and then choose Work. Select the % W. Comp. field for task T2.
  6. From the Edit menu, choose Copy and select the % W. Comp. field for task T1. From the Edit menu, choose Paste Special. Select the Paste Link option, and choose OK.

The % Work Complete for task T1 is not updated to 100% as expected but displays 0. It will not be updated until there is a value greater than 0 displayed in the work field for the task.

In Microsoft Project version 3.0

  1. From the View menu, choose Task Entry. Enter two tasks, T1 and T2, with a duration of 1d for each.
  2. Select task T2 and choose Assignment from the Edit menu.
  3. In the Resource Assignment dialog box, type Bob, and choose Add, then choose OK to add the resource. Choose OK to exit the Resource Edit form.
  4. In the Gantt Chart view, select task T2. From the Edit menu, choose Form. In the Task Edit form, type 100 in the % Complete Box and choose OK.
  5. From the Table Menu, choose Work. Select the % W. Comp. field for task T2.
  6. From the Edit menu, choose Copy and select the % W. Comp. field for task T1. From the Edit menu, choose Paste Link.

The % Work Complete for task T1 is not updated to 100% as expected but displays 0. It will not be updated until there is a value greater than 0 displayed in the work field for the task.
