When you check the spelling of a Microsoft Works document with the spelling checker and a line of text contains an abbreviation (such as Mr. or Ms.) the spelling checker will check up to that point in the text, skip the rest of the line, and resume checking on the next line of text.
For example, if a sentence reads as follows
The big bron fox jumped over Mr. Smith’s laxy dog.
Works will catch “bron”, but will stop at Mr. and ignore the rest of the line, missing “laxy.” The spelling checker will continue on the next line.
This problem will occur with most abbreviations (Mr., Mrs., Ms., Rev., and so on). The abbreviation does not have to be the first item in a line to cause this error; the abbreviation may be anywhere in a line of text. If the insertion point is placed after the abbreviation on the same line, the text will then be checked from the insertion point.
- From the Edit menu, choose Replace.
- In the Find What box, type the abbreviation.
- In the Replace With box, type a wildcard character, such as "*" (without the quotation marks).
- Choose Replace All. This will eliminate this abbreviation, replacing it with the wildcard character.
- Run the spelling checker.
- Once you have checked the spelling, reverse the process and replace the wildcard character (*) with the abbreviation.
Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in Works version 3.0. This problem was corrected in Works version 4.0.
