Windows 3.1 Janus build 68

Post by kappabeta »

Why was this removed from the FTP? We now just have 26, 34e, 43e, and 61d. Why remove 68? Was it confirmed to be fake or something?

3.10.068 was removed because the copy we have only had some files from the actual Build, while the rest was from either 061d or RTM. I can upload somewhere (not onto the BA FTP, because it'd be too incomplete to be accepted there) the old ZIP file I have with the files that are 100% certain to be 068, if you wish. The search for the full Build continues.

mrpijey wrote:It was removed because it's a frankenbuild. Mixed together with files from other builds. And no one seems to be able to separate the non-original stuff from the b68 stuff, so we had to remove the build since it's an improper one.
So why do we have an incomplete Windows 3.0 beta and an incomplete Windows 2000 build 1983 that was found on Crazybytes disc number 36 then?
I think it was because of the latter (separated the non-original stuff from the real stuff).

There's no problem keeping an incomplete build on BA. Of course it would be stupid if we only had like 2-3 files from the original beta, I don't know how incomplete b68 is. Do you have a number of how many original files there are?

Windows 2000 build 1983 is largely complete, but it isn't bootable, making a tricky install.
Windows 3.0 build 55 setup files are RTM, but the rest of the OS has a real interface from that build.
So like chicago build 40, Windows 3.1 build 68 was a "fake" made from several files from the real 68 and merging them with the complete builds 61d and 103.
I'll later try contacting microsoft developer network and ask for a complete copy of the 68 build.

- kappabeta: No, the Chicago 40 that was floating around was made not from actual 40 files, but from files claiming to be from 40 but were never confirmed to be such and were most probably fake.

- mrpijey: I could send you the files I do have that I know for certain are from 068. But it's some 20-30 files at the most.

Hardly surprising, as the Microsoft Developer Network is just that - for developers, they don't have old beta versions of software lying around!

Nice. Back to betas, Microsoft will never give you a beta that is 21 or 22 years old, because they deleted 3.1 build 68 from their servers, and they don't have it, even if you are a subscriber. I have the same incomplete Janus build 68, and if this removal was unfair or a full version is found someone may reupload it.
