My new server...

Post by compgeke »

I finally got a server up and running and I had a quick question.

I got it from my brothers friend who had it sitting out side on his porch for ever. I don't know where he got it from but he is only 11 and when he turned it on it loaded XP and the user picture was a naked person so I unplugged it and when I got it home I inserted my DBAN disk and wiped the drives. (Why would you give a computer full of porn to a child?)

Anyway, would you run Windows Server 2003 Standard on it? It has Windows XP temporarily (my own install) to see if it will run without crashing since it was sitting out side and they dumped motor oil down the side of it.

The specs are:
Emachines T2824
2.53 GHz Celeron (Yeah, I know, Celeron)
1 Gb. DDR 333 Ram
120 Gb primary hard drive
40 Gb. slave hard drive.

Here are some pictures:

The program on the screen is an active monitoring program that monitors my temps and the fan speed.

I plan on adding larger hard drives if I install WS 2003.

Yes, I would run Server 2k3 on it. I've compared, S2k3 runs faster and lighter than XP on the same machine.
Goodbye.

Tomorrow I'll get the disks and install Server 2003 since I took them to school because I was planning on upgrading our class server but didn't since when I told someone to type "20480" and press enter they typed "2048" and hit enter so now we have a server with 1.92 Mb free on the C:\ drive and the other 20 Gb free on the D:\ drive.

What do you think would happen if I set a static IP to 127.0.0.1?

Give that desktop to me - I'd like to harvest the parts. (J/k.) Actually, I would kill to get that PC.
You can't know if it was full of porn - but a virus sure could've changed the user picture.... I know many people that age who have porn in their PCs - you would be surprised.
---------------------------------------------
Anyway, I say that's a nice configuration for a small server - it definately needs some upgrades, though, like you said. Good luck with it, and I hope no parts break.

I would run Windows Server 2003 Standard bu you can also run Ubuntu Server too which is great. One or the other should do fine with those specs above.

Now after the installation accepts the key it doesn't want to activate because it is an invalid key (even though it took it during the installation).

If anyone has a key they would be willing to give up it would be greatly appreciated :D .

It's illegal to give a Legal Product Key.

Is your Windows Server 2003 CD geniue? You may ask for a Product Key or COA from whom you have the CD.

Not necessarily. If the key is a retail key that hasn't been used or isn't being used it is still legal because that license is not in use. This also means that say if I gave you a Windows Vista Business key I can't be using it when I give it to you and I can't use it once I give it to you.

I believe it is called the transferring of a license.

And yes, the CD is genuine. The only disk I own that isn't genuine is my server 2000 disk because I used my friends disk and added the ...270 hack into the setupp.ini file.

OK, if your CD is genuine. It doesn't have an COA accompanied with it ?

I have a genuine Server 2003 Key. But it was included with my trial 180-Day Windows 2003 Server CD.

I don't really need it. I was just going with Server 2003 because it was newer. I'm going to use Server 2000 for now and I may find a key sometime. (I don't believe in using google to find keys because most of them are invalid to start with).

If you're using Windows Server 2000, then it doesn't require activation.
So, I will PM you with product key.

If you have access to DreamSpark, you can get a free and legitimate serial for Windows Server 2003, 2008 and 2008 R2, all standard editions.

Too bad it's only available for universities/colleges but hey, I'm going to one next year. Anyway, I just checked the website and it looks pretty interesting. I'll definitely check this website once I study at my college.

I don't because the only place here at 127.0.0.1 that has the dream spark is the local college and I can't attend for another 4 or 5 years. (I'm only in 8th grade).
