Chicago Build 81 Installation Problem

Post by winlego3210 »

I was installing Chicago Build 81 when this error appeared:
General Error 57. Cannot copy setup files. Media may be damaged. (However, I forgot the rest of the message.) Why is it happening? :?

It's a known error. Download the VHD from KenOath, which is on the FTP (if you want). ;)

Indeed. Use the following information:

Beta ID: 140743
Password: d8f20fe0a

This has been tested to work on build 81.

I lol at someone seriously suggesting to use Ken's VHD. Technically it shouldn't be on BA FTP anyway, everything non-original is being deleted...

Everything's fixed, but it says it can't find COMMDLG.DLL on startup. What is happening?

change files=30 and buffers=30 in config.sys to files=90 and buffers=90

I've changed it, but the error does not go away, so I copied the COMMDLG.DLL to the C:\CHICAGO folder. But, even though the error had gone away, the shell won't load. What's happening (again?)

Try reinstalling it, then.

It works! But, when I used 256 colours, the display looks garbled and almost unusable. Anyway, I managed to reset the settings to 16 colours but on 800*600 resolution. Maybe it's because of the Cirrus Logic driver I'm using.
If you want a workaround:
Don't reboot when Setup asks you to. Instead, insert a DOS boot disk first then reset and boot from it.
Then, when the DOS on the floppy disk boots up, type edit C:\config.sys.
Change Files=30 and Buffers=30 to Files=90 Buffers=90. Then, you save the config.sys file, exit the edit program, remove the disk and reboot the machine. The problem has been fixed.

I know that display goes 16 colors. I have tried to install drivers but failed (it won't start anymore). Just shows up black screen. As winlego3210 installed one driver, it only changed size. Can the color be installed? No. Maybe on QEMU, but I don't know if it will handle Chicago.
Windows 3.x had 16 colors after install (but you can install drivers).
And yes, that is fix for cab32.exe.

For higher resolutions on Chicago build 81 on Qemu, use the default Cirrus Logic video card as long as you have the ISA Cirrus Logic (5426) bios, you can even have 1024x768x256 color mode working :)

So where can I find the BIOS for this one?
