I believe it's a mixture of javascript and CSS wizardry, iirc.

It is JavaScript, since if you turn it off it reverts to a standard logo.

It works for me on the standard .com address with Chrome.
It also works using .co.uk address here.

It seems kinda odd to me that this would be their birthday logo. Usually that involves cake, candles, more languages, and a mouse over saying happy birthday. Well that and they (most of the time ) celebrate the birthday on the 27th.

It looks very nice but many internet users have complained about doing web searches while using Google after Google released their new animated logo.

They say that it slows down their computer by a lot such as netbooks users since their computers are not suited for intense graphics but just simple internet use. I mean my computer is fine with this new logo as it is kind of a gaming computer. Here is the article about internet users complaining on the new logo.

Also, the article says that they are demonstrating HTML5 on their webpage. Not sure if this is totally true but seems like it.

I also find that some user is complanining on its look. I find it pretty amusing . Here is the link to that though it's from the Google forums and the person who criticized its look is probably a spammer hence the username made out of numbers.

There is new Google doodle on google.co.uk, google.de, google.fr, google.it.
I wonder why they don't change it to this logo on all Google sites, however this one is pretty cool
