[REQUEST] Sysinternals NTFS for Windows 98

Post by anonymous74 »

Trying to get NTFS support working on some Windows 98/XP dual booted systems. I've found some other programs that claim to do this, but they appear to be that classic crippleware model we all know and "love". Microsoft appeared to have made a sysinternals package for this, but I can't find it anywhere. Has anyone got it in their archives?

Sysinternals made such a thing, but it was before they were acquired by Microsoft, so no, Microsoft didn't make it.

I believe that the Sysinternals' solution had the limitation of being read-only, but I'm not 100% sure. See what the Web Archive has to offer. Maybe you'll have some luck. (The read-only version is among these links).

P.S. If you manage to find the read/write version, please write back. Other people want to know too :)

Ah, good info. Didn't know they were a separate company. I'll take a look through the archives and see what I can dig out.

Edit: Had a look, found the read only version which will be fine for my needs. The read/write version never got archived though from the looks of it.

FWIW, here's a link to the demo downloads of SysInternals' corresponding commercial site, Winternals:

I had what I believe to be the pro version 1.0.1 sent to me on the VCF forums, so I've got it now. I have been warned that NTFS writing is very unstable though, I've yet to see whether or not this version has it. Apparently it was removed quickly.

I think I've already got what I need, unless you have a version of it that's confirmed to have write support.

You don't search Sysinternals for NTFS drivers. These are all free readonly versions.
You search its Winternals paid software subsidiary twin brother. Winternals NTFS for Win98 ReadWrite driver was part of the so called "Admin Pak" which had more "pro" tools besides NTFS drivers, as their WinPE CD generator tool to run their recovery tools, long before BartPE was a thing.

Check you need a license key to run the drivers, as them don't have trial mode (that's what Sysinternals capped versions are for). I feel you know what to do in such case :-P

thanks for the info! The one I was sent on VCF was apparently from the admin pack? at least I believe that's what the guy said :P
I still have yet to test it out on one of my 98se systems though to confirm.

If you can, create a network share from another computer and then access it that way from your Windows 98 machine. I have a 2.6 TB network share that Windows has no problems accessing. I use this to exchange files with it.

This also makes it completely file system independent too.
