Windows 98 "Protection Error" When Trying To Boot In VM

Post by JohnsterSpaceNT »

Hello. I recently installed Windows 98 First Edition in a Virtualbox VM, but every time I try booting it normally, I get a "Windows protection error" and then I'm only able to start it in safe mode. How do I fix this from happening everytime I try starting it normally in a VM?

1/28/22 Edit: After looking at your replies, I decided to use 86Box and as a test I installed Build 224 (Beta 2) of Windows 95, which was able to boot successfully. Windows 98 First Edition should now work when I try booting it on 86Box.

Decrease the RAM. If this does not work, then use the Windows 95 Processor Fix: https://archive.org/details/fix-95-cpu-v3-final
I LOVE Windows Whistler Build 2419!
And Windows XP RTM! :D

Or to also test compatibility of certain apps, software, hardware and such

I tried decreasing the RAM, but it did not work. So then I tried the Win 95 processor fix iso, but that didn't work either since it only works with Windows 95 and not Windows 98. Is there a version of it that works with Windows 98 or something else?

Don't use virtual machines (especially VirtualBox) to install Win9x. Use an emulator like PCem :)

You can install Windows 98 First Edition on PCem or 86box but you need very powerful CPU.

My laptop can handle Pentium emulation, and it has a Core i5…

I am sure it will be enough powerful if you emulate Pentium 100MHz

But Windows 98 might be a bit slow on aforementioned emulated CPU.

Not really, I actually used 98 (both FE and SE) on my real Pentium 100 back in 2001 or so, and it ran just fine. It also runs just fine on 86Box on an emulated Pentium 75.

Up to 400~500MHz should be fine, anything above that can lag

This is due to an error in NDIS driver of Windows98 First Edition. this error will occur if your CPU speed > 2.1GHz. you need to get a newer version of NDIS.vxd, for example, the one in Windows 98 Second Edition, and copy it to your First Edition to replace the old one. After this, your First Edition will work properly

try to disable vt-x on your virtual machine (if vt-x is enabled on your real pc)
