[OFFER] WfW 3.1 Beta 1, NT 3.1 build 404 Advanced Server
Windows for Workgroups 3.1 Beta 1
This thing was made merely a month after Windows 3.1 release and calls itself both Sparta and Winball (as well as just plain Windows 3.1), but doesn't show any obvious build numbers anywhere. Inside WINBALL.DRV (renamed to WFWNET.DRV in later builds) is this about dialog:
I guess this raises more questions than it answers. Download here.

Server edition of the March 93 beta. Download here.

I'm very interested on the WfW build, as the about dialog says 3.2.026 instead of 3.1.026, and the file is the only build number source. I'm thinking if it actually isn't a driver version instead of build number.

3.2.026...makes sense since the internal file version of wfw3.1 would be 3.10.2.xxx (xxx being the build number).

Except that in the first build we have that uses 3.10.2.xxx, namely 014, that dialog box already says 3.1.014.

Why would what's precisely winver contain a driver version?

This is from early April, 014e is from late June IIRC.

Windows 3.2 could have been easily confused with Win32.

Re: [OFFER] WfW 3.1 Beta 1, NT 3.1 build 404 Advanced Server
Thank you for the new builds Overdoze! I got the WfW 3.1 build up and running in PCEm (I don't have much experience with it so it took me a while). Interesting how it calls itself 2 different codenames (Winball and Sparta). I wonder why this was? Anyways, here are some screenshots. If anyone wants to add them to the BetaArchive wiki or BetaWiki that's totally fine.
2 Different References to Codename Sparta (One in Non-GUI Setup and one in GUI Setup)
And here is a screenshot of a networking error I got due to my DOS version being too new. (I used 6.22, but didn't even have an ethernet card attached, strange.)

I collect old laptops and mess with old software.

Try DOS 5.0. It worked for me. BTW, I've noticed that "book" in ClipBook Viewer isn't capitalized like in later builds, while WinMeter is called System Meter and has different icon.anonymous74 wrote: ↑Sat Mar 27, 2021 10:07 pmThank you for the new builds Overdoze! Interesting finds! I don't have any interest in networking this VM, and since the error is by-passable, I'm just going to leave it as-is. Thanks for the help though!
