Upgrading Windows Vista SP1 to Windows 7 RTM through leaked builds.

Post by Xeno »

Not much to say, won't be doing a video on these due to mental health strain. This was a surprise to me, I wasn't expecting this to be possible.

Specs:
CPU: Intel i7-4790k
RAM: 8GB Single-Channel DDR3
Storage: 1TB Toshiba Laptop HDD

Green = No Issues
Orange = Minor issues that don't prevent upgrading
Black = Blocked from future upgrades.
Red = Major issues that prevent upgrading

Windows Vista SP1 (6001) > Win7 6519
Flawless, no issues or bugs!

Win7 6519 > Win7 6608
Flawless, no issues or bugs!

Win7 6608 > Win7 6780/6801
Sadly going to builds 6780 and 6801 both resulted in setup complaining that the disks were formatted incorrectly.

Win7 6519 > Win7 6931
Flawless, no issues or bugs!

Win7 6931 > Win7 6941
Flawless, no issues or bugs!

Win 7 6941 > Win 7 6956
Since the current leak of 6956 uses files from 6801 for the installer. I had to swap out 7000s install.wim. But upgrade's fine and there are now 3 Windows Media Player icons on my superbar!

Win7 6956> Win7 7000
Flawless, no issues or bugs! Had to do one additional restart when starting setup

Win7 7000 > Win7 7022
Flawless, no issues or bugs! Now there are only 2 WMP icons in my superbar.

Win7 7022> Win7 7048
This upgrade did work on my Dell, but since I swapped to a newer machine this upgrade failed at the last moment saying that "Setup could not configure this computer"

Win7 7022> Win7 7057
Flawless upgrade!

Win7 7057 > anything higher
Due to every leaked build complaining about being unable to read information about my disks. I am unable to upgrade further on my newer PC.

However, this is the upgrade path I was able to get on my Dell Dimension 3100c

6001>6519>6608>6931>6941>6959>7000>7022>7047>7062>7068>7077>7127>7201>7227>7229>7231>7260>7264>7600

Great project! If your getting bored, you can always take a break! I certainly did on my (just finished) Longhorn installation project.
I collect old laptops and mess with old software.

Check out my website for vintage computer reference information, info on my collection, and more!

My projects are currently on indefinite hiatus due to lack of motivation. See my past ones here: https://www.betaarchive.com/wiki/index. ... nonymous74

Thanks @anonymous74!
I think for YouTube I'll just stick with shorter videos and instead, type up my findings. It's much easier for me!

it would actually be a better idea to take the path from vista sp1 6001.16659 build (beta) because its the last leaked one before 6469's compile.

and you probably know win7 is based on vista sp1 beta

also you can create a wim from sysprepped 6568 and replace the one in 6519 iso. that installs fine.

Wasn't aware of SP1 betas working but as for the sysprepped. The main aim was to do as little editing as possible. It's why I only opted to change cversion.ini for my Dell Dimension 3100c only and nothing else.
