Any mobile Windows OS emulation?

Post by msvetov »

So, is there any way to emulate/natively run Windows CE-based OS not using the real PDA? I know about Microsoft SDK emulators, but I ask about _real_ emulators like 86Box or Qemu - SDK emus are not so powerfull, and many games (and, may be, apps too) can't be launched on them.

This is true for all emulators/SDKs up to and including Windows Mobile 2003 SE, which use Virtual PC for emulation and thus emulate an x86 CEPC.

As far as I know, emulators for Windows Mobile 5.0 and up (which use the Microsoft Device Emulator instead of Virtual PC) do emulate an ARM device, as the WM5.0 emulator was way slower when I ran them on a Pentium III than the Virtual PC-based emulators. You're also getting save states, better networking and SD card support with WM5.0.

But how can it be done through Virtual PC?

It's not actually vanilla Virtual PC, but a customised version of it. I think it's even the Connectix version, which is located in a folder called 'platman' if I remember correctly. Once you install the Windows Mobile 2003 SDK (I believe), you'll get the aforementioned emulator. You can then use it to boot .BIN files which are supplied with the SDK (and optionally the Emulation Images, for example the 2003 SE Smartphone images). It's been a while since I've been playing with this, I'll give it one more try once I catch some time...

I wonder if you could run this image in VBox. VBox supports *.vhd so it should theoretically work.

The WM images are not .vhd, unfortunately, but .bin.

Well you could convert them to vdi using vboxmanage’s ConvertFromRaw utillity.

You can't, these are raw ROM images which can't be booted conventionally

Oh, that makes sense. I’m going to try emulating how a CEPC would boot.

I downloaded a Windows Phone beta from the FTP for some time (still have the file on me), but I still couldn't figure out what emulator/virtualizor to use with it. I just want to run that beta itself on some sandbox. The beta in question is one of these: https://www.betaarchive.com/database/br ... +Phone+7.0

Oh, I've been trying to find out how to emulate Phone 7 too. I'm working on a large archive of Windows wallpapers and I've been trying to hunt down nearly every wallpaper in existence, including Phone 7's.
