How to open SIT file?

Post by Msdos622 »

When I was downloading betas of Mac OS (Classic) from winworldpc, sometimes I got SIT files downloaded. How to open them. I tried 7-zip 19.00, but it gave error (I'm using Windows 10). If there is no any apps for Windows, I can emulate Mac OS 7/8/9 on Sheepshaver/BasiliskII.

Usually, SIT files need to be imported in to the Macintosh or Macintosh emulator and then extracted from within the Mac using an older Mac version of Stuffit Expander.

It is true that you need to import SIT files in a Macintosh emulator to use StuffIt Expander to extract the archive contents.
On my Windows 10, I use the "Cockatrice III" Macintosh emulator running System 7.5.3 for that purpose (it is based on Basilisk II): https://sourceforge.net/projects/cockatrice/
I have also used Mini vMac: https://www.gryphel.com/c/minivmac/index.html which is a very good and small program.
However, you should probably avoid it to decompress SIT archives because for some strange reason, StuffIt Expander 5.5 fails to decompress some SIT archives while running inside MinivMac (and works fine in Cockatrice III/Basilisk II) : sometimes no files are extracted at all, sometimes only parts of the archive are extracted. And you may not notice there are missing files as there is no error message.
