Windows 98 Second Edition Start menu.

Post by Rob Jansen »

Hi.

I have a question about the Windows 98 start menu.

You know the normal startmenu with the vertical Windows 98:

can i change it to this:

I only need the logo in the start menu (i have the unofficial SP2).

Is in shell32 or something like that?

This is very simple. Just edit explorer.exe and replace the first bitmap with taskbar...

Use Resource Hacker and open C:\Windows\Explorer.exe (assuming your drive is C: and the Windows folder is named Windows). Then you can easily replace that image with your own.

It worked.

I know how to change them in Windows XP and Server 2003 but in 9x versions.

But another question:

Does anybody know where the Windows banners are kept in Vista?
In XP it was msgina.dll and winbrand.dll but not in vista.

The various branding images are held in the 2 DLL files found in the two subfolders of C:\Windows\System32\Branding.

Just found that folder on vista but they are empty, only 1 folder NL-nl (the dutch language folder but is also empty).

And anyone know where to put the .bmp file for the bootscreen in Windows 98.

You have two options. The first is to just put the .BMP file into the root directory of the boot drive, named as LOGO.SYS.

The second is to edit IO.SYS, and replace the logo, that's in it with your logo - you need a hex-editor for this.

What are the dimensions and color depth of this .BMP you have? The bitmap LOGO.SYS needs to be 320x400, and in 8-bit color.
