Change / Hack the DirectX version in Windows 2000

Although it seems silly I want to change the number of DirectX in Windows 2000. I want to open the DXdiag instead of telling me DX9 tell me that I have DX12, I think that in the registry there is a way to edit it, or otherwise it is possible, how do I do it?

It won't change the DirectX version if that's what you want.

Nope, he wants to change *ONLY* the version number of DX9, so that it says DX12, even if it isn't really DX 12

Maybe they want to get around DirectX version checks for newer software, although it would be futile with win2k. Or maybe trick people into thinking they got dx12 on 2000...

The extended kernel does include a DX10 stub.

If I already try with the extended BWC kernel to install DX10, I can install DX11, now the DX12 is in development for WinXP, Win2K and Win7. I happen to be in a project called "Windows 2020" which is like a spin-off of Windows 2000. On my site there are several screenshots of it (still in development and programming): microback.totalh.net

This only in English, is the same design of the page of MS of 1999 and in another part of the site there will be a Windows Update v8 that has the same style as v3 nothing else that is only for Win2K.

Actually I think I've almost gotten to the bottom of this. Under HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE in the registry, look for Software/Microsoft/DirectX and you'll find two strings: InstalledVersion (binary) and Version. I changed version to 12.x and got this:

It's not fully effective though, as the installed version is still listed as 9.0 beside the 12.x once dxdiag is started.

Um. I don't think, and I'm pretty sure, that you can't install DirectX higher than 10.

Officially, the last DirectX for win2k is the 9.0c February 2010 update. A modded June 2010 update was made by BWC and there is an optional stub for 10 in the extended kernel. It doesn't equate to the full version though, and I think it relies on beating arbitrary version checks more so than programs actually utilizing dx10 features.

You may want to try this: DirectX 11 for Windows XP. Try this at your own risk but it allegedly makes Windows XP report as Windows 7 5.1.2600 with DirectX 11. Maybe it also works on win2k.
