Actually I've found how to remove the timebomb of 9834

Post by Camwinny »

That's why I asked about how to use it daily.
You need the install.wim files of 8.1 and 9834.
First, Launch CMD, enter: dism /mount-wim /wimfile:"X:\...\install.wim" /index:1 /mountdir:X:\..., and the file will be unpacked to X:\... (Both two wim files are needed to be unpacked)
Search "spp" in X:\...\Windows\System32(8.1) and the following files:
Image& X:\...\Windows\System32\spp folders.
And copy all of them to 9834. (Requires permissions)
And change back their permissions: NT SERVICE\TrustedInstaller.
Importantly, sppsvc.exe and the files of X:\...\Windows\System32\spp\store\2.0(including X:\...\Windows\System32\spp\store\2.0\cache\cache.dat need NT SERVICE\sppsvc
Image
Last, pack them back to save your changes: dism /unmount-wim /mountdir:X:\... /commit
(You can also discard the 8.1 files: dism /unmount-wim /MountDir:X:\... /discard)

Maybe what I said is not very detailed, I sincerely hope you'll excuse me.

This method is provided by @Camwinny
Enjoy!

Great, a solution finally to running Windows 8.1 with a Start Menu that is much better than Windows 10. Questions: Will this work in build 9841 as well? And also, how can install the drivers without running into error codes?

This probably is not going to work on 9841, as it doesn't boot with current date. I think it's going to work on 9845 or 9907.fbl_ie (yes, fbl_ie!)

And this will break feature installation under Server 9845.

Well, it only can work in 9834, 9845 and other builds which are added watermark "Microsoft Confidential",under 9920. (In fact, they are not expired versions of digital signatures.)
And the drivers problem isn't worked out. But you can install drivers for old hardware if you used them.

When you are to launch setup, you should change the time to 2014. But after installing, you don't have to do that.

Well, it didn't work

Timebomb is still there. And I couldn't finish the installation. It kept rebooting every time.

You have to change the permissions of sppsvc.exe, data.dat, tokens.dat, cache.dat. Add sppsvc.
Image
Click "Add", Enter "NT SERVICE\sppsvc". And put all the hooks in the box below. And your first problem will be worked out.

And your second problem happens to some computers. If you use virtual machines, please set the processor to two.

If you can still see the timebomb watermarks, don't worry. They are just words which can be edited. After you go into desktop, if you don't see the preview warning, that means you've done it.

By any chance, could you share the patched version of this build with the timebomb removed?

I uploaded it to OneDrive. Please save it to other place(like MEGA, because I can't upload files there) as soon as possible. It is Chinese version. I didn't find English version.

I can't seem to download it. Either the permissions are set incorrectly or it's been deleted.

I can now download it, but I already create my own version with the en-us version. I also installed it on a VMware machine. However, I can't activate it and I think that it might restart the VM every two hours. Here is a screenshot of my copy:
Image

But good news, during setup, it asked for a Windows 8.1 Pro key and I was able to sign in to my Microsoft Account.

Edit: It looks like your version actually debombed the build while mine did not. I will restart the machine with the image that you made, but with networking enabled to see if I can activate Windows.

Edit#2: I can now also activate it. I have considered installing it on my main PC (it's multi-booted so no worries there) and will do tomorrow.

Your problem is also the sppsvc permissions.
When you succeed, the desktop is like this:
Image
You have to find those following files:
\Windows\System32\spp\store\2.0\data.dat
\Windows\System32\spp\store\2.0\tokens.dat
\Windows\System32\spp\store\2.0\cache\cache.dat
\Windows\System32\sppsvc.exe
and then do as following for all files above.(All those files are needed):
click properties.
Image

Security-Edit
Image

Add
Image

Enter"NT SERVICE\sppsvc"-OK
Image

click"sppsvc", then click"Full control"
Image

Importantly, remember to do as above for all files which I've listed above.

How to remove the water mark?
Well, find shell32.dll.mui.
Then use Resources Hacker or Restorator to edit it.
The watermark is in the last paragraph of "STRING".

I wiped out my own image and used yours instead. I got it up and running, but now I want to add Windows Media Center and I can't. I used the "Add new features" within Control Panel and "Changing the product key" as well. Please help since I need WMC.

Sorry, that isn't what I can help because I hardly use it. Maybe you can search online for solution.

I saw that the disc image has two indexes; the first one which you modified, was based on Windows 8.1 Pro and the second index which was based on Windows 8.1 Core. I know for sure since I actually did it on my main PC, but if you debomb the second index, then it maybe possible to install WMC as I saw screenshots of the builds that come after (i.e. 9841 and 9860 up to 10041) being installed and WMC added as an addon with a different key.

Surprise! Surprise!

Debombed 9834 can be activated!
And I noticed that 9834 is more stable than 9845

Well I know that and that's great, but what about Windows Technical Preview for Consumers that's based on Windows 8.1 Core? It's not debombed just yet. I can install WMC on that edition with no problem.

Actually Windows Technical Preview (6.4) could be considered Windows 9, so you are actually using Windows 9 *hehe*

If I'm free, I'll do that.
