Acer Recovery CD Issues

Post by grommit2007 »

I have encountered an issue with an Acer recovery CD (for restoring Windows 95). When I tried to use it in PCem v13.1 using a standard Windows 95 boot floppy image, I tried to use the PKUNZIP.EXE utility on the CD to extract the ARCHIVE.1 file (which is just a renamed .ZIP containing the entire OEM preload) located in \ARCHIVES to decompress it to the C: drive. However, it asks for a password to extract the .ZIP file, and after further investigation to locate the password (by searching the .EXEs on the accompanying Acer OEM boot disk and the recovery CD), I was unable to locate the password.

Is it possible that anyone can help me with this .zip extraction issue?

Here is the recovery CD and the accompanying boot disk in question:

You could try opening up the .EXE file with a hex editor. Also, do you have access to the original CONFIG.SYS and AUTOEXEC.BAT files for this recovery CD-ROM?

Also, does this model of Acer PC actually match that of the machine that you're emulating in PCem? I understand that 86Box has support for emulating certain Acer and AOpen machines, and the same might also be true of PCem, though I'm not at all sure as to whether they actually work correctly or not. I'm also adding all of 86Box's Acer machines as well as some entirely new Acer PC models into my own emulator but I will need to make sure that they are using the correct chipsets and that they actually have all of their features and components, since certain Acer PC models used Acer/ALi chipsets whereas others used standard Intel chipsets.

Either way, I will also download the recovery CD-ROM to investigate this issue further (as well as for preservation purposes).

The CONFIG.SYS and AUTOEXEC.BAT files, along with a few other batch files are on the recovery boot diskette.

(Edit: After further investigation, it appears that the CPU, video card and sound card match up with PCem - Pentium, ATI Mach64 PCI and SB16)

(Edit 2: The recovery CD and diskette appear to be for an olive green early 1996 Acer Aspire computer)

Are the CONFIG.SYS and AUTOEXEC.BAT files the ones that were originally shipped by Acer? If so, are they set to automatically load the recovery program?

Yes, they are automatically set to load the recovery program, and they are the original files shipped by Acer.

Update: I have managed to extract the password from the ZIP file using the program PkCrack and the password is "5F1Ch".
