Today test Windows 1.01 with Multitasking MS-DOS 4.0 to see that if windows 1.01 will work on Multitasking MS-MS-DOS 4.00. Windows 1.01 Setup say MS-DOS 4.0 need 216k to order Setup Windows on MS-DOS 4.0. I was able to install Windows 1.01 on Multitasking DOS 4.0 i set up memory to 384k (‘memset default 384’ to allow setup to run) but any attempt to execute WIN.COM ends up with ‘Cannot find Windows startup files. I can’t say if this is an incompatibility or just a consequence of restricted memory The ICL version MS-DOS 4.10.20 had Windows bundled and Larry Osterman’s blog said they once had Windows working. Web site name http://16bitos.com/410ms.htm have MS-DOS 4.10.20 ICL OEM version. The ICL version have Multitasking MS-DOS 4.0 combined Windows 1.03.

Re: Testing Multitasking MS-DOS 4.0 with Windows 1.01
We actually have Windows 1.03 ICL OEM, which may actually be the copy that was included with ICL MS-DOS 4.10. Perhaps that one would work better on Multitasking DOS?
EDIT: I just tried running this ICL Windows 1.03 on both Multitasking DOSes we have on the FTP and it displays "Program too big to fit in memory" immediately after bootscreen, regardless of memset settings.

Re: Testing Multitasking MS-DOS 4.0 with Windows 1.01
I have concluded myself that only the ICL multitasking DOS 4.10 is likely to work for quite a few reasons, one reason being that running the slow boot KERNEL.EXE will just fail with "EXEC failure".

Interestingly, it seems that even Windows 2.03 did not declare the OS type in the NE header.
