Sad Announcement: AbyssUnderground FTP Server retired

Post by Andy »

Hello all,

It is my duty to announce the sad retiring of the AbyssUnderground FTP Server. It has been with us since the days of OSBA but 2 years on it is time for it to retire its services and become a game server.

The server has been very under-used for the last 6 months, so I've seen fit to give it other tasks more worthwhile than just serving files. As all of the files on it are already on BA and SP FTP's, there is no problem in simply removing everything on it.

I hope this does not sadden everyone, but the server has been very good to us the last 2 years, and it deserves a rest!

The server will be removed from FTP duty shortly.

Guess that makes betaarchiveftp.co.uk kind of pointless.

The Betaarchive FTP is NOT abbysunderground.
The BAFTP is running from the datacenter where this website is running on and abbysunderground ''was'' run from andy home.

No.
Abyssunderground was in a different datacenter in texas.
The site is in the same DC as BA but not the FTP

That domain pointed to that server yes, but its due to expire anyway so I'm not bothered.

It's sad to see the AbyssUnderground FTP server go. I've been checking this website since very early last year when I found OSBetaArchive again. However, when I found it, it was already closed down, so I did a search of that name, which led me to this website. I remember hearing the AbyssUnderground server mentioned all the time while I was checking this webiste, and I guess I won't be hearing that name anymore. I've also been to the portion of OSBetaArchive on the Internet Archive Wayback Machine and have seen that server mentioned there, so this is even more sad for those here who migrated from OSBetaArchive after it closed down. Well, at least there's still SillyProject and the BetaArchive FTP.

I would keep it open but its not using any traffic and the beta's are taking up space I can use for something else now that we have three mirrors of it.

...boohoo?
If its underused, why is everyone all sad over the server closing? It's not like Andy stabbed your dog.
Theres the SP mirrors, and most download server hosts, although slow, have copies of the files anyway...

At least the server will now be put to better use

Because it was the first server for OSBA and the one used on BA for a bit.

The server was finally taken offline and retired today at 18:00GMT.

Anyone trying to access it will have been kicked. The accounts are removed so you will get login errors and the IP now directs to BetaArchive's homepage.
