I heard somewhere, that one Beta DVD version of Windows Vista is able to build and save ISOs with standalone rescue discs, AIK or something similar. This feature was removed in later beta versions.

Which version/build/service pack was it?

Some possible build numbers I have found online: 5384 5456 5219.

As i know isn't a single beta that can recover or rescue an ISO, only the PE or Preinstallation Environment you can only recover the system serious damage from corrupt BCD, MBR etc
