Windows Vista Beta 2 Build 5259 with Vista RTM drivers?

Post by The_Build_Tester »

I have this laptop, it's a Compaq Presario F577CL Notebook that is Windows XP, Vista, 7, 8, 8.1, and even 10 capable. I have once installed Windows Vista Beta 2 Build 5840 and got success with Vista RTM drivers but I am thinking of build 5259. I tried 5231 on two PC's before one has an AMD Radeon HD 5450 and the other which is the Presario F577CL, has an Nvidia GeForce Go 6100. For the Presario F577CL (what I call, "The Vista Laptop,") Had success with an old driver for Windows XP (but aero didn't work because the driver was old and didn't support DX9 etc...) Is it possible to install 5259 and use Vista RTM drivers successfully or will I have to resort to using those old Windows XP drivers? PS: Is is possible to get aero working natively without registry editing (just wondering.)

i had GF6600 running 5259 Aero with XP drivers just fine
no reg tweaks required

its even questionable if working WDDM drivers existed at that point
as both b1 and b2 rely on XP drivers, you just need mid-range GPU that is DX9 capable

I just installed the Vista RTM drivers but they installed with an error so I installed the XP version of the driver and rebooted and I was stuck on like an 800 x 600 resolution so, I uninstalled all the monitors and rebooted and now I have full resolution but, aero doesn't work. The card on it is GeForce Go 6100. I am not sure if it's in the Nvidia 6 series or is it in the nForce Legacy. Dxdiag right now tells me it's DirectX 9.0c so I don't know why it doesn't work.

6100 isn't mid range gpu
at the time aero was made for Radeon 9800 and GF 5600 or above

I wonder why 5840 works with Vista RTM drivers. Anyways I found a newer driver from 2013 by Nvidia that should work but I get, "A device attached to the system is not functioning," when I open the installer in XP compatibility mode even as an Administrator or running it in elevated. I rebooted to see if the installer would load but no luck. I tried without a compatibility mode but nothing happens when I open it. Device Manager's include sub folders feature when manually updating drivers or installing them, didn't exist until newer builds from around 5840 so I don't know how to manually update Nvidia drivers on an XPish Device Manager even though the 6100 isn't mid range.
