[OFFER] SCO Open Desktop / Open Server Release 3.0
So I recently got a boxed copy of "SCO Open Server Network System 3.0" that was an opened box. In addition to duplicate copies of three of the manuals, it contained a copy of "SCO Open Desktop / Open Server Release 3.0" on CD. According to the original packing list, this is not original to this box. The CD doesn't appear to be bootable, and I have no boot disks (unless the ones included with the Network System will work). Also, keep in mind, that like much of SCO's software it likely requires a set of license and activation keys (which I also lack for both pieces of software). Is anyone interested in a rip of this CD? I don't see it on the FTP (only 5.0 and up).
BTW, I will make an upload out of "SCO Open Server Network System 3.0", but it's on QIC-24, and I don't have a tape drive yet to do so.

Yes, please upload this!
Re: [OFFER] SCO Open Desktop / Open Server Release 3.0
Ok, we might be able to build a complete system.
I have two boxes labeled "SCO Open Desktop - tape version" and "SCO Open Desktop - update", it has everything but the QIC tape. Where are you located?
PS: I have "SCO Open Server Network System 3.0" on CD

So presumably the boot disks from that set should work. Very cool!wbyte wrote:I have two boxes labeled "SCO Open Desktop - tape version" and "SCO Open Desktop - update", it has everything but the QIC tape.
I'm located in Joliet, IL (near-ish Chicago).wbyte wrote:Where are you located?
I should be able to get the disc ripped and scanned tonight or tomorrow.

Hmm... they may not be. Those appear to have a completely different graphic design style than the boot disks that came with the network system, which appears to be roughly the same age as the CD. Can't hurt to try though, I suppose.

I think we should try. Did you manage to dump the QIC tape ? Check your PM.thunderbird32 wrote:Hmm... they may not be. No, I have not. I don't currently have a drive to do it with. I won't have the money to pick up a drive for a while.wbyte wrote:Did you manage to dump the QIC tape ?
Re: [OFFER] SCO Open Desktop / Open Server Release 3.0
Talk about resurrecting old threads...
I downloaded the CD from the archive and managed to install it by using the boot floppy from SCO and a N2/relsup floppy from another 4.2 version also in the archive.
Here's what I used: https://mega.nz/file/UJYyAbIb#dMiq1DNuv ... U5LdQCMAK0
It works mostly because the boot disks are shared across different versions of the setup.
I installed it inside the latest unstable 86box build (3.0.0.2983) in a machine configured like this:
Code: Select all
[i420EX] ASUS-PVI-486AP4
Intel i486SX 33mhz + 487SX
32 Mb RAM
Serial Logitech mouse, 3buttons
Video: ISA16 Orchid Farenheit 1280 [note for the setup: the emulated bios is 2.0 - you could use the Oak OTI-077, they both support 1024x768@256 colors, but I haven't tried it]
PCI IDE controller
SCSI controller: aha-154xA
address 0x330
IRQ 11
DMA 5
HOST ID 0
BIOS C800H
SCSI cdrom, controller 0 id 5
During the setup, I used the serial and activation from another copy of SCO Unix 4.2.
When selecting the install media, choose "SCSI CD-ROM". The installation should go smoothly.
During the first boot, I got a kernel panic while it tries to install MS-DOS (to run dos programs in compatibility mode, I think). I had to reboot in single user mode, fsck /, reboot, it will run fsck on /usr and mostly it seems to work. If you choose not to install MS-DOS compatibility, you probably won't have to deal with this.
Here's the very dramatic login screen from a booted system:
And the system running:
So, I guess that the link above could be added to the FTP and the system moved out of the incomplete folder?

Hey! Thanks for necro-ing the thread with a workaround! Now we've finally got a way to install this thing. Greatly appreciated!
