As obvious as it is, windows update doesn't work in the build. I have found the cause of this to be the update program trying to connect to the long-dead link http://beta.update.microsoft.com/win8m1 ... uredir.cab. There seem to be many equivalents of this in windows 7 RTM,which most of the updates will work in 7850. My question is, if I want WU to work do I have to replace wuapp.exe (update program) with the 7600 version or will that not be possible?

Try it. It will most likely fail.
