In May 2, 1983 - Microsoft introduces the Microsoft Mouse for IBM PCs and compatibles. The oldest leak build Microsoft Mouse is version 2.00 December 1983. The first application designed to make full use of the mouse was Microsoft Word and early version Microsoft Windows 1.00. Microsoft Mouse as it was one of Microsoft's earliest hardware products the other being an Apple II Z-80 CP/M card.
Microsoft Mouse in 1983 has program like PIANO.EXE. This is the same piano program shown off as a "full screen dos application" in the December 83 Byte magazine Windows demo. LIFE.EXE is a graphical version of the classic "life" program where binary organisms grow or die based on their proximity to others. NOTEPAD.COM. Yes, it's Notepad for DOS!. DOODLE.EXE", a simple CGA drawing program. MENU.COM and MAKEMENU.EXE. These are used to add mouse movement and menus to existing programs that are not designed to use the mouse. MENU.COM has easter egg say "Written by Chris Peters Year of the Mouse!"
I test Microsoft Mouse 2.00 with VirtualBox and it works sent Virtualbox don't use Bus or serial mouse but VirtualBox do use PS/2. To use Microsoft Mouse 2.00 on VirtualBox you need Microsoft Mouse version 6.00 and run Microsoft Mouse version 6.00 mouse.com then go to Microsoft Mouse version 2.00.

Heard that before, used it. That piano screen is actually the same app that was featured in a certain Windows 1.0 pre-alpha.

That's what he said.DiskingRound wrote:Heard that before, used it. That piano screen is actually the same app that was featured in a certain Windows 1.0 pre-alpha.
Also, regarding VirtualBox: if you used something that actually emulates this type of mouse (MS Bus/Serial Mouse), there'd be no need for mixing this with Mouse 6.0.johnlemon647 wrote:Microsoft Mouse in 1983 has program like PIANO.EXE. Re: Microsoft Mouse in 1983
Microsoft Mouse v2.00 only on bus mouse and VirtualBox don't run bus mouse. VirtualBox only run PS/2 Mouse that why i run MS Mouse v6.00 on VirtualBox. Can enable Bus Mouse emulates on VirtualBox. https://www.virtualbox.org/browser/vbox ... x/ExtPacks. PCEM can emulates BUS/Serial Mouse for Microsoft Mouse 2.00.Overdoze wrote:Also, regarding VirtualBox: if you used something that actually emulates this type of mouse (MS Bus/Serial Mouse), there'd be no need for mixing this with Mouse 6.0.
Re: Microsoft Mouse in 1983
Yes, I was refering to various emulators that support this type of mouse (PCem, 86box, etc.).

Re: Microsoft Mouse in 1983
Microsoft Notepad started as name Multi-Tool Notepad and Microsoft Notepad for Windows 1.01 based MS-DOS version in 1983.
Quote from Wikipedia
Microsoft introduced Multi-Tool Notepad, a mouse-based text editor written by Richard Brodie, with the $195 Microsoft Mouse in May 1983 at the Spring COMDEX computer expo in Atlanta. Also introduced at that COMDEX was Multi-Tool Word, designed by Charles Simonyi to work with the mouse. Most watching Simonyi's demonstration had never heard of a mouse. Microsoft released the Microsoft Mouse in June 1983, and the boxed mouse and Multi-Tool Notepad began shipping in July. Initial sales were modest, as there was little one could do with it except run the three demonstration programs included in the box (a tutorial, practice application and Notepad) or program interfaces to it. The Multi-Tool product line began with expert systems for the Multiplan spreadsheet. On the suggestion of Rowland Hanson, who also convinced Bill Gates to change the name "Interface Manager" to "Windows" before the release of Windows 1.0, the Multi-Tool name was killed by the time Word shipped in November 1983. Hanson's rationale was that "the brand is the hero". People didn't associate the stand-alone name Multi-Tool with Microsoft, and Hanson wanted to make Microsoft the hero, so the Microsoft name replaced "Multi-Tool".

Ah - you should check out the icon for the mouse in OS/2 2.x. IBM made one of these too.
