[OFFER] WfW 3.11.26, WinNT 3.1.475, PC-DOS 6.0 beta, ...

Post by Overdoze »

These were found among other old warez from 1993.

Windows for Workgroups 3.11 build 26

Earliest known build of WfW 3.11 from February 1993, leaked by Electronic Rats (ECR). Comes on nine 3.5"-1.44MB disks. Should work fine in most hypervisors and emulators.

Image

Windows NT 3.1 build 475

The final beta of NT 3.1 from June 1993, which was mentioned in an internal Microsoft document and also listed in several warez lists. Leaked by High Voltage. Comes on 24 3.5"-1.44MB disks. I recommend you use 86box, as it may have problems in hypervisors. Ignore the build number reported by Winver, 475 is the actual build number.

IBM DOS 6.0 beta

This is an odd one, since there was no such thing as IBM DOS 6.0 - at least officially. I guess this is actually a very early beta of 6.1 that calls itself both 6.00 and 6.010. The setup program itself seems to be missing (along with some other file on disk 4 that was corrupted) and I couldn't make the first disk bootable, so the best way I could get it running is doing "sys c:" from an earlier DOS version. If you manage to install this, please post the instructions in this topic.

MS-DOS 6.0 build 303

Dated 15th October 1992. Comes on five 5.25"-1.2MB disks and is an upgrade version, the drive must be formatted before starting the installation.

- Jajan131: Yeah, something similar happens with the original RTM which identifies itself as 5098 for some reason.

Windows NT 3.1 build 475 works well in VirtualBox with VBEMP NT installed.

Apparently this "glitch" was introduced before the RTM, but after build 438 (which correctly identifies itself). The RTM infact also correctly identifies itself as build 511 in the UI, but ntoskrnl.exe (I think) still has a wrong file version (3.1.5098), which is only fixed in build 528.

Yeah. Not sure what caused it, but it may have been because of VM storage configuration, since the BSOD listed some storage drivers.

NT 3.x always has problems with disk drivers in VMware and VPC, but works perfectly in VirtualBox. I think I have seen some articles about this before, but I can't find them now.

I think I've seen 475 referenced in some antitrust document. I don't remember which one it was.

MS-DOS 6.0 build 303 has also been found. I added it to the OP for anyone who is interested in it before it's added to the FTP.

I had a look at the IBM DOS 6.00 beta.

The diskette collection captures an install of this DOS over a german MSDOS 5.00, with vgacopy 4.10 installed as well. However, the dates makes most of the tapes easy to sort.

MSDOS The remains of this DOS are qbasic, edit, deloldos, and a few cpi files. They mostly run under PC-DOS.

PCDOS This really does appear to be an early version. The MSD reports itself as "IBM Diagonstics 2.01", the file matches the PCDOS install. Mouse is a pklite version of 8.20. PC-DOS 6 usually comes with 9.01. E is a beta of 3.12. It refers to IBM DOS in MSD, where MS-DOS has MS-DOS.

CPTOOLS These are the additional utilities in PC-DOS. They are dated 31/03/1993 against 2/4/93 of the DOS files. Note here that DOSSHELL is counted in CPTOOLS, rather than DOS. It looks like a number of utilities, like power, and some .sys files are also here. The rest are the likes of cpbackup, ramboost, schedule, filecheck, undelete.

The dates are earlier than my IBM-DOS 6.00 (what the manual calls it), by 3 moths.

The actual DOS files here are the PCDOS and CPTOOLS file.

It's also interesting that the DOSHELP.HLP and DOSSHELL.INI, has merged lines from the original MS-DOS install (in german), and the PC-DOS install (in english), the dates on these files would give one an idea of when the files were installed.

MS-DOS 6.00.0303.

sys.com does not refer to dblspace, although io.sys knows about it.

help.hlp does not cover dblspace, but has a placeholder for it. It also refers to DOSBACK, which is the dos backup utility.

The msdos 5 help system is called 'doshelp'. In dos6 it becomes 'fasthelp', and in windows nt/vi, it's called 'help'.

edlin is not in this sample. I imagine that this is more a woopsie, or that the diskette came out later.

mouse is vers 7.04.

I've actually found another release of this IBM DOS 6.0 beta that appears to be in a better condition. I'll hopefully get to test and upload it in the coming days.
