Solution: How to use WPA2 on Windows 2000

Post by sdfox7 »

For years I have looked into getting WPA2 working on Windows 2000 with no success. While many tools support WPA, WPA2 is the newest and is used on most internet installations these days.

In my opinion, Windows 2000 is still a very capable legacy system, and this post should be useful for anyone searching the web in the future.

You simply need to install a compatible adapter with Windows 2000 driver (mine is a RTL 8188/8192 802.11n), then install Boingo wireless client, which appears to be the only client that supports WPA2 under Windows 2000.

You must have at least Service Pack 4 and at least Internet Explorer 5.5 installed.

I tested it on my Pentium 3 laptop and had no issues connecting.

It supports WPA2 with AES right, or just tkip? TKIP is as dangerous as WEP nowadays- it's pretty much as secure as having your password in the SSID.

Obviously I'm not the op so I cannot give you a definitive answer but if it's wpa2 it has to support aes. Isn't that the only difference between WPA and wpa2? Now back in the day if your access point got a firmware update to have wpa2 you might have to worry about poor network performance viewing it takes considerably more processor power on the router side.

Yes it supports TKIP and AES. In this instance it was connected to TKIP via router, but I also had it connected to iPhone hotspot, which uses AES.

I've got it working using only the Dell drivers/client on my Latitude D630:

It says WPA on another page, but WPA2 is definitely the only one enabled (WPA/WPA2 mixed mode is disabled) on the access point end. The card is a Dell Wireless 1490 (Broadcom BCM4312/BCM2050) supporting A and G.

As far as software support, I guess it depends on your hardware. My WPC54G card also supports WPA2/AES on Windows 98/2000 using the built-in Linksys client. The Boingo client is very helpful if your wireless card lacks a compatible client.
