Leftovers from old Windows versions

Post by Zacchi4k »

I made this thread after a discussion in another thread (http://www.betaarchive.com/forum/viewto ... 60&t=35305).
Post every leftover from older versions you found in any "final" (also RCs are OK) Windows version (not betas except if they're something really interesting), and specify for everyone Windows version, build number and, if you know, and from what previous version/build it came from. PLEASE POST IMAGES TOO

Anyone brave enough to dig through system32 might know about this. Here's one leftover from Windows 9x. The Phone Dialer application. I don't see the purpose of it on Windows 7 but it's there. I have screenshots

On the left is Windows 7, On the right is Windows Me.

And to prove that this is legit and I didn't pull a fast one:
Image

Here's one more thing for now. A leftover dialog from Internet Explorer versions 4-6. (Don't let the buttons fool you, This is Windows 7.)
Image

Later I'll see if there's any more leftovers on Windows Vista and 10.

Some businesses still use the built-in fax services, which utilizes the underlying telephony services - which can utilize the phone dialer (it's part of that component of Windows). I'd wager a guess that if you install the telephony services on server 2016, you'd get the phone dialer app in system32.

There were separate entries for 98 Gold, 98 SE and Me (regarding upgrading to XP), so Future 9x implies a possible successor to Me! Strange that the Optima disc had no such entry.
There were no Neptune, Odyssey or Triton entries. There were also no Vienna or Blackcomb entries in Windows 7 SP1 (Dell OEM) I'll check Windows 95 now.

My Dimension 3000 with Windows 7 has a modem, so I ought to be able to use Phone Dialer to make calls just fine.

If you go into the OOBE/images folder in Windows XP, you'll be able to find 2 Windows ME style box-motifs.

Indeed. Just thought I'd mention it for the sake of the thread. Did you check out everything in ntkrnlmp or is it worth me taking a look there?

Back in the DAY (2004-6) there was a project on the OSBA forum that was a hodge-podge of all the leftovers from old beta versions of Windows, running on top of a windows 2000 or xp base. I don't recall the exact name of the project, since it was such a long time ago. It basically had all the old bitmaps, icons, and various other bits and pieces merged into a somewhat-working OS.

I fiddled around with the two files with Resource Hacker until I found the hibernation and non-ACPI resources.

It's in 8.1 too, of course:

Image
The last 5 icons are from office 2000.

There's even a moricons.dll in the syswow64 folder(on x64 bit windows). Why did they keep it is beyond me. Also, until a TH2 build, regedit used the same icon it did in 3.1.

Taken on Windows NT Server 10.0.... Sorry, let me run through that again. Taken on Windows Server 2016 TP4:

For some reason, the Media directory still has the Windows 7 structure:

Image

Also, this (client) wallpaper is still in Server. I thought that Server editions only had one default wallpaper from 2008 onwards?
