Windows 95 Build 818

Post by 878625670 »

Hi, everyone!
I looked around BA Wiki and found Windows 95 Build 818. It said that @th1r5bvn23 found a picture on his mother's book. He's one of my friends, so I asked him about this build. He gave me another picture which was took more properly:

According to the book, this build is like RTM.
@WindowsNeptune, also one of my friends, told me that some very old Chinese articles showed that the build 818 was a public beta in China. Many people got their hand on this build. But we can't find any other information or anyone who has this build.
Then @boylovegirl, also one of my friends, found that there was someone who had the floppies, and bought them at a very low price. Unfortunately, when he tried to read the floppies, he found that the floppies were almost all damaged. Fortunately, he could copy one file (regedit.exe) from the last disk (Recovery Disk?). The timestamp was September 1995. Now I uploaded it, you can just download it.

We are still looking for this build...

One thing that puzzles me is why MS used the 8xx build number range (usually for Hebrew and Arabic languages) for the Chinese RC's instead continuing the 7xx range (used till Beta 3 probably AKA builds 708/720). And then there's 852...

I guess international releases were branched off from the main line, similar to how 405 doesn't seem to be part of it (though it's an English build, but still).

The thing is, the B3 branch and the Feb 95 branch did not use any random number jumping (except the jump to 4xx), unlike some of the branches for the international languages.

What a nice find. Unfortunately, the file was just taken down. What was the exact date of the file? The file version of regedit is 4.00.818.

I can't remember it exactly... Around September 15 1995.
Link renewed.

You're right... The release note in Windows 95 Build 708 says that it's Chinese Beta 1. Also, the build was built in August 1995. At that time Windows 95 English version nearly sign-off.

Yeah, international builds usually lagged behind English ones, despite having the same or even greater build number.

That can't be true. Chinese Beta 1 is 225.

That's not the same! 225 is Traditional Chinese and 708 is Simplified Chinese. There wasn't any Simplified Chinese build leaked before 708.
