Updating old windows

Post by Jensvde »

Hello everyone,

I want to update my Windows 3.x, 95, 98FE and 98SE computers. Now I know that the MS update page does not work anymore on those old systems, but where can I find all the updates then?

I'm searching for updates in dutch, that's the problem. I can't seem to find them anywhere!

I've already found an unofficial dutch service pack for 98 released in 2008, but that's only 16mb big. There must be more updates, 16mb seems so less?

Thanks in advance!

Jens

I was also searching for the Dutch updates for these operating systems quite some time ago, but after months of looking around I simply gave up after obtaining some Windows Media Player and Internet Explorer versions :|

I would try to find a site that has them for download but I would be careful just incase they have a virus in them. Scan the files before installing them.

I collected a few update patches for 98/98SE in Dutch some years ago.
See if any of them are useful to you.

I've never had any luck with the "unofficial service packs" for Windows 98, they just seem to cause BSODs etc.

Better idea - just don't put these OSes on the internet!

I have had good luck with KernelEx, not as much with extended kernel for Win2k though.
I actually tried to make an unofficial service pack for Wfw3.11, that didn't turn out well.

You can use this for Windows 3.1, I don't think Windows Update was ever developed for the 16-bit platform:

To update Windows 95, you will want to use the Wayback Machine. Since support for Windows 95 ended December 31, 2001, the most relevant page for updates would be from December 15, 2001, the final archive date before support ended.

Windows 95: Download-Windows Update : [Windows 95, updates, updating, downloads, service packs, communications, networking, power toys, kernel toys, previews, administrative tools, deployment tools, management tools, networking tools]

On these pages, you may need to click on each update and "view source" in your browser and find the actual ".exe" link, since there's no way to absolutely accept a license agreement on a now archived site. I have done this and never ran into any problems.

For example, the first update that appears on the page is: Critical Update, August 14, 2000:

To download the update, right-click on the page and select "view source". Then find the ".exe": "<a href="/web/20011213225224/http://download.microsoft.com/download/winntsp/Patch/Q271216/W9XNT4/FR/FrancFix.exe"

Now that link won't work since it's not on Microsoft's server anymore, so you simply copy the "http:" and appended it to the end of your page link.

So, "http://web.archive.org/web/200112150000 ... efault.asp" becomes http://web.archive.org/web/20020211013932/http://download.microsoft.com/download/winntsp/Patch/Q271216/W9XNT4/FR/FrancFix.exe

You can do the same for Windows 98 downloads, support ended July 11, 2006:

Windows 98 Download: Windows Update:

Windows NT 4.0 Workstation (June 30, 2004):

Downloads:

Windows NT 4.0 Server: (December 31, 2004):

Downloads : [Microsoft Windows NT Server 4.0; Service Pack 5; SP5; Service Pack 4; SP4; Option Pack; Distributed File System (Dfs); Routing and Remote Access Service (RRAS); Windows Load Balancing Service (WLBS); Internet Locator Service; Zero Administration Kit (ZAK); Site Server Express; upgrades; updates; hotfix; evaluation tools; previews; downloads]:[

Windows NT 4.0 Terminal Server: (December 31, 2004):

Downloads : [Microsoft Windows NT Server 4.0, Terminal Server Edition; Terminal Server downloads; Service Pack 5 (SP5) for Terminal Server.]:[

I looked on Microsoft's website and it looks like the earliest archive Dutch page was in 2001. There are no Windows 98 resources on the page: http://web.archive.org/web/20011213224245/http://www.microsoft.com/netherlands/pcathome/default.asp

There are some Dutch updates on this page: http://www.mdgx.com/upd98me.php
