Problems installing Windows NT 5 in VMware Workstation.

Post by bailey0799 »

I managed to find a few ISOs for Windows NT 5 (Cairo). I just started to try to install one, and I get a 0x0000003E BSoD, What am I doing wrong?

Edit: I just get the second error now.

Any Tips?

Stop error 0x0000003E is a MULTIPROCESSOR_CONFIGURATION_NOT_SUPPORTED type of error.
Try setting VmWare to use ONLY one CPU (and check BIOS date)

I set the date to 30/12/2000 and I get the second error, PLUS, the VM never had more than one CPU.

As far as I know, the second error is just the boot screen. Now if you can't get past this screen try with Virtual PC.
You're using the DEBUG/CHECKED build, try using another version of build 1691.
You need to install MS-DOS and the MSCDEX driver and then install windows from the dos prompt by going to (CDDRIVE):/i386 and typing winnt /u
It SHOULD work

If you need help on how to change the BIOS date in VPC (can be tricky) just ask me

By the way, set the CPU affinity of VPC in the task manager

I would use Virtual PC 2007 for Windows 2000/NT 5 betas.

Are you booting from CD? You will see this blue screen when booting from CD. Start with 98 Bootdisk with CD-ROM support, fdisk and format, type driveletter:\i386\winnt /b and continue. And don't forget to disable ACPI and Power Management from BIOS.

I have always used the winnt /b switch with NT 3.5.

Since I don't have boot floppies for NT 3.5 (were they ever produced?) it is the only way to get NT 3.5 installed.

Boot off a DOS 6.22 floppy with CD ROM support, and then use the R:\i386\winnt.exe /b switch. With NT 3.5 you usually are required to lock c: first.

When you run winnt without parameters, it makes the floppies.

Or with winnt /ox command, it creates boot floppies only.

Actually NT 3.1 is funny when trying to install without floppies.

I tried both the /b switch and the /ox switch and neither will start setup.

NOTE: I only did this from a Windows 95 command prompt because this is the only way I know of to get screenshots; the same exact result happens even when booted into DOS mode.

I did not run into these issues at all with NT 3.5. With NT 3.51 I have the boot floppy images so no need to boot with a DOS boot floppy.

What are the correct parameters I need to use to make NT 3.1 boot floppies? /ox didn't work.

Seems like your only option is 'winnt' here, even though it will install the setup files onto the hard disk. It's like up to NT 3.5 build 612. If there is another way to create the boot floppy, I would be interested to know.

The best way is upgrade this build from Win NT 4.
