Windows XP "Version 2002"?
To most users, when you go to the System Properties applet in any Windows XP computer, you will see "Version 2002". What does that mean and why should Microsoft put this???
Re: Windows XP "Version 2002"?
I've been told that it is the year you bought it.

You mean when it came out???dlane wrote:I've been told that it is the year you bought it.
Re: Windows XP "Version 2002"?
If it was the year it came out shouldn't it say 2001 since it was released to retail on 25 October 2001?

It's like Windows 1998 or Windows ME or Windows 2000. The year is post-dated. So would Windows 95, except that Microsoft could not figure out how to get the world to put the year M between 1994 and 1995.

Re: Windows XP "Version 2002"?
Microsoft could of put "Version 2003" in MCE 2003, "Version 2004" in MCE 2004, and "Version 2005" in MCE 2005.
Re: Windows XP "Version 2002"?
It's not as simple as that. I think the number 2002 represents something else. I personally think it represents the codebase: Windows XP x64 is 'version 2003' (and NT 5.2). This isn't very strange as it was based on Server 2003 codebase. Note that this line (version XXXX) is not present in Server 2003 itself.
Then again, this is only what I think. Windows FLP (based on XP pro and NT 5.1) is version 2006, and I don't think the codebase of FLP is much different from XP RTM...
Quick inventarisation:
XP RTM (home/pro/k/kn): version 2002
MCE (all): version 2002
XP x64: version 2003
(home)server 2k3: -
FLP: version 2006
I guess sysdm.cpl cannot be reached in starter edition? (couldn't find any screenshots)

I believe it can be reached. If mrpijey has got an image of Starter prepared to be released on the 8th, we will be able to test it.LeoaprM95 wrote:I guess sysdm.cpl cannot be reached in starter edition? (couldn't find any screenshots)
Re: Windows XP "Version 2002"?
Version 2002 is the second edition; it has some more updates integrated than the first version from 2001. I think, it's a bit like Windows 98 and Windows 98 SE.

Re: Windows XP "Version 2002"?
Wait, does the Starter version say "Version 2002"??? Does Embedded have "Version 2002"??? AFAIK, Windows Fundamentals for Legacy PCs (FLP for short) has "Version 2006".AlphaBeta wrote:I believe it can be reached. In windows xp service pack 0 also came out, it can be when it came out fully stable version of windows xp, correct me if I'm wrong.
Re: Windows XP "Version 2002"?
Hah. It's the same with Office.
It was called Office XP, bu the product was, for example, "Word Version 2002". Same here: the product is Windows XP, but underneath it's "Windows Version 2002".
Why? It's unknown. Maybe there were some brief plans for other Windows SKUs based on 2002, or maybe they planned to "refresh" XP in the future, like "Version 2003"...

err no
same was with server, it was at one point branded as Server 2002
but this was during its development, which after XP obviously continued

BTW, early Windows Longhorn builds once referred itself at Longhorn XP. I checked the Screenshots of build 4033 and had "Version 2003" on the System Properties applet.

Actually, this thing was first seen in build 2465. It's not the Second Edition.timmy1998 wrote:Version 2002 is the second edition; it has some more updates integrated than the first version from 2001. I think, it's a bit like Windows 98 and Windows 98 SE.

Re: Windows XP "Version 2002"?
I think it has something to do with SP1 or a Windows Update. I`ve always wondered as well.
Re: Windows XP "Version 2002"?
There was no official second edition... Just the Version 2003 is based on NT 5.2, but it still calls itself Windows XP, no things like Second Edition.
