[Request] Help with tons of old Mac OS & software

Post by keldroth »

Hey all,

I've been working for a friend for a few months, and one of the things he's had me doing is selling things on eBay. What he gave me most recently to sell was a ton of old Mac Developer CD's and other vintage Mac software. When I search Google or other engines to try and research prices and rarity, this site is often linked to, so I thought I might get a little feedback from this community on what's rare/wanted/pricing etc.

Some of the CD's include:
*Macintosh System Software 7.0: The May 1990 Alpha Development Release
*Apple IIGS System Software 6.0: The Beta Release Fall 1991
and various OS releases like this going up to Mac OS X
*Rhapsody: The Yellow Box Edition for MS (I know it's MS)
*OpenDoc (Various Discs up to 6.0 I believe)
*ADC Developer CD's (I have a Majority of them from 1991 to 2002)
*Macintosh Technology Seed (Also have a Majority of them from 1996-2001)
*Computer Using Educators Conference (Have about 6 different discs of these)
*A few WWDC CD's (93-99)
*Some Apple Link
*Quicktime: The Beta Release
*Quicktime 1.0, 1.5, and 2.0 for Developers
*Other Various vintage Apple Software

Again any feedback on rarity/pricing/demand would be greatly appreciated. I still have a lot of sorting to do so if you have any questions about specific titles listed here or about others feel free and I will answer them ASAP

What ADC Developer CDs do you have, specifically?
It's called a hustle, sweetheart.

I'm currently sorting through them. So a list will be coming shortly hopefully. I know for a fact I have all 12 of the 1991 and I believe all of 1992 as well. Then I'm not sure. Will post a list ASAP though.

Here is the list of them that I know of so far. The person having me sell them says he never threw any away so I will be going over there in a few days the next time I see him to look for more if some are missing.

Few notes:
1)If there are more ADC Developer titles other than the Dev CD series, I won't have a complete list of everything Apple Dev for probably a few days/a week since I do hold a regular day job and go to school.

2) I didn't start listing ones new in shrink wrap for awhile, because I recently started using Dragon: Naturally Speaking, and forgot to mention the few more that were new in wrap.

3) 2002 is the latest I saw for Developer CD series, if there are more after (E.G. If they just had discs such as Mac OS X 10.1 Dev release or something like that) let me know and I can try to sort through those as well.

Ok... Here it is:

He has made it clear that none of it will be dumped but sold, I've tried to make out some kind of deal to buy the lot but so far nothing. I think this entire collection will be lost to a private collector.

Well looks like he have some Developer CDs and several Apple discs that were not available to the FTP, but his plans is to investigate the rarity of item, what he want and what price he will list for the collector. The most rare item is the Apple IIGS Beta CD. Also, he have contacted me about my request for the Dev.CD Jan 98 SSW, sent me MediaFire links and I complain that he doesn't use CD imager application.

I apologize if there was bad communication between us.

Yes I did enforce that I had no intent on dumping any of it. That was and is to ensure that value remains in the collection but I did realize that essentially nothing is free so I dumped at least one ISO for TrustBA for their patience with me. Also I do not know if it was an addendum to the forum rules applied in September or if I failed to read them correctly (which is actually what i assume), but I do apologize for starting this thread if discussing this collection is breaking posting rules or if I have upset anyone.

As to your email to me, I actually did not save it in my inbox and it was deleted. Iirc I think I had said I still wanted to make an absolute complete list before considering any offers, although I could be mistaken there. To keep this post from being a mile long, I have put the document into a mediafire link and have updated it. My "employer", lucky for me, is very patient with me as well.

Here is that link: http://www.mediafire.com/download/oay7t ... vised.docx

I would love to talk about value of collection and I will defer to mrpijey or admin on the best way to proceed in the direction of how to deal with offers. My own personal preference is to sell the lot as a whole or at least in complete sets IE: An entire year of developer set by year as opposed to just a particular disc.

Re: [Request] Help with tons of old Mac OS & software

In my personal opinion the value of this collection is not diminished by dumping the discs, as the value lies in having and owning the original discs (and working such). But as you know very well, the contents may at any time be destroyed (even original discs deteriorate over time, not to mention accidents) and one day all your precious data will be lost. BetaArchive is here for the preservation of these old tidbits so we should try to collect and save these discs if possible. And any collector that purchase this set will still have it in its original form, with the original print and all. Same goes for floppies or any kind of digital collectors item. An original floppy set of say, Windows 1.01 would still be valued very high, regardless to the fact that the OS exists everywhere online as dumped img files. But how many would buy WIndows 1.01 on original discs if they knew that the discs were unreadable?

Just as a basic (and perhaps somewhat inaccurate comparison), Shakespeare's original writings are valued to the billions today, yet everyone can read his plays, i.e they are freely copied. The originals however maintain their historical and collection value. The same should be considered with software. And if no one except an extremely small amount of collectors could read his works, do you think anyone would even know anything about him today? Apply this logic to any other collectors item and you will know this is true (paintings, baseball cards, whatever). I think the value would be increased by dumping and sharing these, as more people would be aware of them, and more people would seek out and want the original discs. Originals has always been more valuable than copies and this will not change because the contents are available online.

As a preserver I think not dumping these tidbits would be a disservice to this (and any other) community that likes to learn and tinker with old software. One day it will be lost forever, and for what? So some collector at some point can have some unreadable plastic discs... by then it will be worth nothing. And the original software company (in this case Apple) have no interest in preserving these themselves as they are only motivated by greed and see no profit in sharing these with the community. However, as I've mentioned before to others, I would be willing to pay for the service of having these dumped as I can pay for both shipping a drive back and forth to store the dumped contents, or (but not in this case) pay for shipping of the media so I can have it dumped, scanned and returned to the owner. Personally I am not interested in the original media, only the contents and to have it properly preserved.

But I am not going to try to force you to share these, you can do whatever you want with your collection and I hope you get your values worth for them. But it will be a loss to everyone else if these get permanently lost as everyone will lose, even the collectors.

Good luck with your sale!

Can you upload the Rhapsody Yellow Box for Microsoft Windows? Windowsers might love it, just as I would love to see it.
Thanks in advance.

Good fortune to the eBay Auction!!!

Yellowbox is on the ftp already.
Windows Defender for great justice! Bugs are an international trading company. I need to defeat the anti-debugging and obfuscation methods. It wasn't for Intel's absurd ability to load in ie6. Why even waste time with people in an envelope?

Oddly enough...I'm going to find myself begging here. I would really really like to somehow get a copy of all the October and November 2001 Apple Developer CDs. I am mainly interested in getting the full version localized versions of Mac OS 9.2.1 that are on these. I am not seeking the original by any means and hope very much that keldroth has a successful sale.

I am willing to offer any Mac-based expertise assistance that I can to keldroth that a long term Apple-enthusiast and certified technician can offer which probably isn't much more than anyone on here has offered. In addition, I will gladly pay postage and duplication costs or some temporary hosting costs to download the disc images of these. I'm not even that picky on how he provides imaging...my preference is Toast images, but .dmgs are fine as well.

Thank you in advance and feel free to PM me with any questions.

To mrpijey,
Thank you so much for the info you have provided me, both in forum and in our email transactions, you have given me so much to work with and I understand your line of thinking regarding the value of the physical discs as opposed to a copy somewhere in existence i.e.: Apple 1 emulation as opposed to the real board.

To anyone else interested in the dumping, I guess I have no real way of enforcing it unless someone knows a way to "legal up" some papers so to speak, but I am willing to sell the collection at at a considerable discount to any collector who would agree to dump any non sealed BA related content not already on the FTP should it be requested.

I am also avoiding eBay just for the time being that I want to give BA a good amount of time to see if anyone wants it, and if a collector willing to dump wanted it, I was willing to post it on ebay at the discounted price for them.
