PC98 Error - Windows 95 Setup

Post by iBetaTosh »

I look to upgrade my HDI file with Windows 3.1 to Windows 95.

But I get a certain error preventing me.

Here's an image of what I'm talking about.

I can't tell for sure since I don't read Japanese, but it looks like Windows 95 Setup was expecting to find a reference to smartdrv.exe (disk cache) in CONFIG.SYS, but didn't find it.
Goodbye.

Look in your config.sys file and remove any references to smartdrive.exe.

It says Setup cannot continue when SMARTDRV.EXE is loaded. Remove that reference from config.sys.
PC98xx MS-DOS never get EDIT.COM/QBASIC.EXE, however MS-DOS 5.00x and 6.20 have its own SEDIT.EXE as a text editor.

I use an dos PC98 disk with cdrom support from a forum and I get an setup message with 2 buttons,

I click the left button and it freezes me back to the screen where i typed in WIN.com.

So I need someone to examine this problem.

I will give you an emulator with the CD ROM, 2 FDI's and an HDI File.
https://docs.google.com/leaf?id=0ByKrCf ... 4&hl=en_US
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
INSTRUCTIONS:

First, insert the CD Access FDI into Floppy Drive 1 where it says on the file label "CD Access".

Second, insert the HDI into IDE #0.

Last, insert CD into IDE #2 and start Windows from C Drive. Then go to file manager to Q Drive then go to the Win95 folder and start setup. click OK on the message and you will see the problem..

PS: I set C Drive's config.sys FILE= amount to 30. :3

No PC98xx emulator has perfect CDROM support. The safest way is just to copy the install files from the CDROM into the harddisk image.

It says that it needs 4391088 bytes of free space to continue.
I used some Japanese OCR to convert characters to text.

Well, The problem looks like some program is incompatible. Try reinstaling from scratch with Win 95 not 3.1.

CONFIG。SYSファイルに smartdrv.exe が見つかりました。
セットアップを中止します。
Romanized: CONFIG.SYS fairu ni smartdrv.exe ga mitukarimasita.
Settoappu o tyuusi simasu.
Translated: Smartdrv.exe was found in CONFIG.SYS.
Setup is stopping.

So remove smartdrv.exe from your CONFIG.SYS and try again.

Edit: some of the emulators (I don't remember which exactly right now) can generate a HDI for you. So have them generate a sufficiently large HDI for you.
