Will Windows XP Become Abandon ware by the end of 2011?
Since Windows XP is almost 10 years old (October 25) will it become abandon ware?
Just wanted to know really.

Re: Will Windows XP Become Abandon ware by the end of 2011?
Not likely, many buisnesses still use it :/ I hate it as it's too old. Windows 7 is way better, but most public places like Schools/Library here still use it. Plus all the big buisnesses, I can't count the number of times on the news when they are showing website on IE6 on XP :/
But it should, by Windows 8 it'll be 3 OS's old.

Curious if it does go that route will you still be able to activate it? (I use vlk licenses) but for the home users who still haven't jumped on the 7 bandwagon.
Re: Will Windows XP Become Abandon ware by the end of 2011?
I was wondering about activation once it's unsupported the other day also. I know I don't ever have to activate either because I use a corporate disk (from a company that went out of business).
Re: Will Windows XP Become Abandon ware by the end of 2011?
Depends on your definition of abandonware. It will not be thrown into the public domain if that is what you expected.
Re: Will Windows XP Become Abandon ware by the end of 2011?
XP is old now and it's time to leave it and upgrade. It will not be abandonware when 2012 starts.
Windows 8 is gonna be awesome!
Re: Will Windows XP Become Abandon ware by the end of 2011?
They didn't make Windows 95 public domain or make it accsessable for free, so why should they do it with XP?Lego399 wrote:It will not be thrown into the public domain if that is what you expected.
Apple published all Mac OS untill 7.1 and are available on apple.com, I would like it if Microsoft published Windows 3.11 or stuff like that
Re: Will Windows XP Become Abandon ware by the end of 2011?
well i been waiting for xp to fall of the support list ... the only thing you would have to do is get an fully update version to the day of its abandonment .

The odd thing is, if you are a technet (paid) member - the 3.11 disks and DOS are still available.

Re: Will Windows XP Become Abandon ware by the end of 2011?
Correct me if I'm wrong but, I dont think any of the versions of Windows have become abandonware. Windows 1.0 - 3.1 may have been but I wouldn't expect them to ever go to that any year soon.

Windows 9x, Windows NT (before XP) and related products have been available to paid subscribers of MSDN and Technet, but were removed in 2005 due to an agreement on the use of Java.
On November 13, 2006, Sun Microsystems made the bulk of its implementation of Java available under the GNU General Public License, so one day Oracle can accept this agreement without grounds, and legacy products from Microsoft will be available again.

April 2014 not 2013.
Re: Will Windows XP Become Abandon ware by the end of 2011?
Interesting thing I just thought about was windows 7 and most likely 8 will have XP mode in them still so Microsoft can't really do much to get rid of it yet if they are going to include it as a option for companies that have older software. But of course xp mode is already activated so i'm sure someone will figure out how to take that info out and reuse it.
Re: Will Windows XP Become Abandon ware by the end of 2011?
I still use Windows XP (I can't afford an upgrade and I don't like how Windows 7 breaks a few of my older games), so hopefully activation will still work after support is ended...
I would indeed doubt, though, that Windows XP would be tossed away as easily as other old Windows versions were, because of XP mode and such.

Abandonware?
Considering the fact that the percentage of users that use XP has been still pretty high now, I doubt if it will become abandoned...
Besides, many people(at least I think so)are accustomed to XP, and they would need time before they switch to 7 or other OSes...
If not so, why does MS provide Windows XP Mode for Windows 7(Professional Edition or above) users?

Re: Will Windows XP Become Abandon ware by the end of 2011?
Microsoft Windows XP will be ''abandonware'' by the rules here on, 8 April 2014, then the support has ended and no further updates will be made/released by Microsoft.
Not sooner maybe even some time later it can be on FTP.

Re: Will Windows XP Become Abandon ware by the end of 2011?
As Rob said above, it will become abandonware after 8 April 2014, but only by this forum rules. Microsoft will not consider it abandonware. Notice that Microsoft released Windows 3.11 in 6 April 1992 and stopped supporting it in 31 December 2001 (almost 10 years later), but it was still released in embedded devices (like cash registers) until 1 November 2008. That's 16 and a half years later!bigski112 wrote:Since Windows XP is almost 10 years old (October 25) will it become abandon ware?
Don't know if the same is being done with Windows 9x, but LitePC can strip down Windows 98 to under 8MB, so i guess it's very "embeddable". Who says Microsoft will not do the same to XP up to 2020 or beyond?
Since Microsoft will stop supporting it, I believe they will eventually release a patch or update that either removes or disables activation, probably inside a SP3 rollup package. There is no logic in having an activation that can not be activated after the End Of Lifecycle...OmegaApex wrote:Curious if it does go that route will you still be able to activate it? I used to be schizophrenic, but now we're cured.

It wont dissapear this year or the next. I think that this could still alive for more than 3 years. Take care of the mayority of PCs around the world, still running Windows XP as primary OS, and change OS of all this computers can take a lot of years.

Re: Will Windows XP Become Abandon ware by the end of 2011?
Abondonware is nothing legal. Technically, all Microsoft products are wtill copyrighted and none are really downloadable. Abandonware is just something people arbitrarily decide. While 10 years is the policy of this site, it isn't like after 10 years it's all of the sudden legal to give away Microsoft products. The being said, I doubt Microsoft would be interested in a legal battle over old software like windows 9x. XP, however, is still sold by Microsoft, still used in XP mode, and still supported. Anyone can call it abandonware if they want, but I wouldn't risk XP for some time (3+ years, at least, in my opinion).
Re: Will Windows XP Become Abandon ware by the end of 2011?
Yes, The OS will become abandonware by April 2014 when Microsoft cuts its support.
Windows Longhorn is by far the most amazing piece of software developed by Microsoft. Everything else is just a junk.
