The Microsoft Network (win95)
The Microsoft Network (win95)
Am I remembering incorrectly, or was there a version of this that worked over IP instead of dial-up? This was before MSN came on the scene...
Re: The Microsoft Network (win95)
As far as I know there was never a version that supported IP, it was only Dial Up.
Also, Windows 95 on the internet today would be terrible because of lack of Java, Flash and whether you have IE 2, 3 or 4 on 95 you would have limited HTML 4 support & HTML 5 support.

well, the support for modern web design would kill you. I tried to get 95 on line once. Every website gave me errors.

Yes well also it doesn't support redirect and therefore you cannot actually get to a page. needs the ../index.htm etc to load a site.compgeke wrote:well, the support for modern web design would kill you. I tried to get 95 on line once. Every website gave me errors.
I wonder if this number will still dial?
Anyone with a modem like to try it out?
Re: The Microsoft Network (win95)
I could, but I don't dare to call from europe to usa lol
kinda expensive
think its easier to send mail to some ms support or call them and ask
tho with win95 support killed I highly doubt it still exist

Re: The Microsoft Network (win95)
yes its a free phone number in the uk, and i rang it. it does seem to connect to something (lots of funny noises) ill try to find a working modem to try it out.
Could be problematic as i have had 2 modems blow the power supply before. not healthy.

Java 1.5 runs on Windows 95, I believe I got a notice saying I was using an unsupported OS, but it installed just fine and works. Not that many sites use java, seems many more use flash.
Flash 7 is the newest for Windows 95, but there was a way to hack a file so that sites think its actaully Flash 8, for Firefox only.
Firefox 2 works, and with the user agent switched to something newer, youtube will let you in, and with the flash hack, flash will load since all versions below 8 are denied access since they haven't been tested but flash 7 still works fine for youtube.
In the end you get Youtube on Windows 95 working just fine. Not really practical for everyday use, but interesting to see that you can still do this on a 15 year old OS, and its nice for your VMs:
