BITMAP files

Post by os2fan2 »

I'm slowly putting together a cdrom with all of the wallpaper bitmaps / jpgs etc from operating systems to 2002 or so.

The majority of the files are tiles, rather than bitmaps, especially up to 1998 or so. When bitmaps were supplied, these were an extra addon. Hard disks at the time were not the sort of thing to clutter up with a 9 meg BMP file. Still.

B are bitmap files, like 'prarie wind.bmp'. J are jpegs, like in Windows XP, and L are various logo files, according to assembly.

Currently, it looks like:
  • A pdf that explains all of the files.
  • B1990 - Windows 3.0 (6 files)
  • B1992 - Windows 3.1, 3.11, Wfw 3.10, Wfw 3.11, Winnt 3.x, and some betas (26 files)
  • B1993 - OS/2 1.x, 2.x, 3.x 3.x ppc, single bmps, 35 files
  • B1994 - OS/2 2,3,4 bitmap arrays, 14 files, source, and samples presented.
  • B1995 - Windows 95, 98, ME 15 file
  • B1996 - WinNT 4.0, 2000, XP, 33 files, plus 7 more 'setup' files.
  • B1997 - OS/2 4.x single bitmaps, 45 files.
  • B2002 - WinXP logon avatars. - 24 files
  • B2005 - EC/S additional wallpaper, (some of these are BIG).
  • J1995 - Plus95 themes, including reissues (98, ME, Winnt 4 rk), 21 files
  • J1998 - Plus98 Static wallpaper. 15 examples
  • J1999 - Windows 2000/ME jpg files, 21 files
  • J2002 - Windows 2000, 23 files, including the 'XP wood' theme wallpaper.
  • J2003 - PlusXP and themes wallpapers.
  • J2004 - Ungrouped files, eg LH, all MSFT downloads.
  • LCHI - 10 bitmaps from chicago betas, including reconstructed 'jaguar genuine parts' tile.
  • LOS2 - OS/2 boot screens and lockup screens, 3.0 - ECS 2.0 - includes original .lgo files.
  • LW31 - Windows 3.0, 3.1, 3.11 vgalogo.rle, with oem files for IBM, NEC, Zenith. Compaq, and deadwin
  • LW95 - Win9x default LOGO.SYS files, plus samples from fix packs, dos-logo.se and Wengier's DOS logo.
  • LWCE - Wince files, various (mostly windows 2000 (ie powered)
  • LWNT - Windows NT files, mainly lanman, winnt, and 256 bit versions. Inc win2k betas, neptune, powered, embedded.
In another release, which i am assembling, there is things like MSCEMENT, Windows 1900, Windows Pirate, and Windows PE bitmaps, along wuth some files from other packages.

This is a nice project.
I am really looking towards an ''beta'' release of the CD and the ''rtm'' of it.

It runs parallel to several other wallpaper projects, and has been running variously over several computers (in sequence).

I've gathered all of the stray bits and tried to

VISTA = wallpapers from vi60, vi61. The count here is somewhat less than what i have heard elsewhere.

LINUX = a smattering of linux walls.

OLDER = commercial packages of walls from the early 1990s, etc. Some complete directories are listed here.
  • borland = a floppy disk of walls, 9/9/91
  • IBM153 - http://jonaquino.blogspot.com/2007/03/1 ... earch.html
  • MAC - a dozenbackground textures from 1996
  • OEMPC - Walls from Acer, HP, IBM, Digital, Compaq, including some win31 vintage tiles.
  • OS2ADD - additional BGAs and VGAs downloadable for OS/2 2.0 (inc source VGA abd BGA files)
  • OS2LIKE - various OS/2 related downloads. Some, like cheetah, are quite old (lifted of a 2.0 server)
  • PSP312 - from paintshop pro 3.12
  • Stardock - yes, stardock abandoned OS/2.
  • TileOS2 - more tiles for os/2, including some that look like being recicled.
  • Win95 - flock (3.0), redbricks, circles, rivits2, thatch, redtile, halftone and setup in 7 different colours.
  • WENDY - 16 photos from local sources.
  • WINNT - interesting winnt walls, inc the nt4 source tape files, win1900, pirate, CeMeNt, etc
  • Work - a set of wallpapers from some unidentified package, dated 2000
digital was eaten by compaq, eaten in turn by hp. The files came of a digital computer, still in its unsealed case, after two sets of digestions.

The 'official Windows 7 theme packs' has just topped 500 different files, including some of the beta files, which were released as additional themes early after the release. Some themes contain duplicates, eg Dawn and Dusk is completely reissues.

Really, the vista (ie win 6.0/6.1) stuff has hit something like 622 files, 44 folders (including some thumbnails + descriptions. It's nearly a load in itself.

On the other hand NTOS2's 522 files clock in at 69.3 mb., the 'OLDER' project comes in at 674 files to 203 MB.

While it's interesting to track this, it's probably not as exciting as the older stuff.

This is a contact sheet for the Longhorn stuff (J2005).

Image

I've stayed away from the various abstracts with the name of the DOS on it.

This is the Windows 95 themes J1995. Other packages include a lot of these themes and extras too.

Image

Here's the Chicago piccies. It's got a different setup.bmp too. jaguar and vgalogo are derived from syslogo.

Here's some OS/2 stuff.

LOS2: OS/2 Boot logos.

The official ones are OS2* and ecs*. All of these are replacement logos for OS/2 4.x and above (included).

Image

B2003: OS/2 1.x - 3.x

The fleur3.bmp is my correction of fleur.bmp

Image

B2004 includes some OS/2 bitmaps too.

B2007: OS/2 4.x

Image

This is the first OS to include a large number of full-screen wallpapers: 8 fullscreens without the OS label!

The thing's getting there for upload. Just a taster for what's in store.

Here's B1992 (Windows 3.x, etc). Since this contact sheet was made, there's another bitmap to add.

Image

Here's B1996 (Windows NT)

This has now moved on to beta-1 stage, with K9080 being the release code.

It's 510MB in size, mostly due to vista junk. The readable bitmaps are in the second-level usually, eg \ntos2\b1995.

Just to figure where and how to upload...

An other bitmap (concrete.bmp) has been added to B1992. This is growing seeing that the set of bitmaps fell out of use in 1996.

Absolutely love this project! Did it ever make it out of the Beta stage, by chance? I have quite a large archive of more esoteric bitmaps (mostly from older systems and software, such as the Blit, Sun workstations, HP-VUE, CDE, Quarterdeck DESQview, Xerox Rooms, etc.) that I'd love to merge the completed version of this project with :)

It's uploaded to beta-archive, under compolations.

It has a few more bitmaps in it at the moment, such as OS/2 lion, eCS, etc. There's a lot of big files in the OS/2 stuff, so i put image type stuff.

The whole thing makes a cdrom in itself, but it is spread across multiple directories, so you can use full-screen or tiled wallpapers.

For example, the B1992 directory includes all of the usual win31 stuff, stuff from nt 3.x, stuff from Korean and Japanese releases, and stuff from the win31 directory.

Most of the wallpapers from released themes are under J1996, which has all the theme wallpapers from 95Plus, 95Plus in Win98, ThemesNT, ThemesKids, and a few betas. J1998 contains the Plus98.

I've got a few OEM files, scavanged from laptops etc. Much IBM, but (gosh) digital, recovered off a digital laptop, the box opened long after digital was swallowed by compaq and then dell. Even gateway and packard bell get a lookin.

Vista (aka Seven, 8, 8.1 and 10), and modern pictures are captured on a second cdrom. It's got a lot of themes and wallpapers, but no read file. This diskette has not made a release as yet.

Vista betas are on the first diskette.

I could integrate your stuff into the full cdrom. It's nice to do a spot of trabbie engineering on different operating systems (make windows 3.0 look like OS/2 or whatever). My current wallpaper is ibmblue (an OEM wall-paper from the aptiva era).

There is a second wallpaper disk, which is basically vista 6.0 to 6.3, and win10. It's still pretty large, and mostly done in the days of windows 2000, when the focus was on making directories full of wallpapers, rather than the changing schemes that vista brought in.

I'm not exactly sure how to work this release, since i imagine that linux users might want to just play with the piccies.

There's a number of duplicates, but -duplicates-once gets rid of these.

By the way, if you want to get all bitmaps in dll, exe files you might want to try ResourcesExtract (if you can't run it on the system itself, copy files to newer computer). You'll probably find much more than you expected.

Some of the bitmaps on the cdrom were extracted from DLL files.

On the other hand, if you poke extra bitmaps into some DLL files, you will get more bitmaps. I have done this with several W2K installs, pushing all of the WinME jpegs into the W2K setup. Works a treat.

Nowdays i just install the minimum, and run a script to hook everything up.

I can't see it either. I'll have to do a new master of it soon, and find somewhere to upload it.

The latest build is 675 MB, includes OS/2 Lion.

This was a really great collection! I've had it on my HDD but lost it 2 years ago in a complete data loss, and I've just came back to BA a few days ago, so yeah

I've uploaded the cdrom to BetaArchive, but maybe they have decided it's out of their wick. If it is, then i ought find somewhere else for it.

It started life in 1992, with Windows 3.1 and 3.0 overwritten. But it kept on growing, until we get what it is today. The latest one is OS/2 Lion. I have all of the vista/6.0-6.3 and winx stuff on a different cdrom (volume 2). It has a lot of beta stuff as well.

The next project was meant to be a disk of beta goodies, like screen-savers. Much of this has been augmented in the Win9x project.
